Quote:
Jim Davidson, the comedian and former gameshow host, has been arrested as part of the Metropolitan police investigation into alleged sexual offences by Jimmy Savile and others.

The 59-year-old, who became the face of the BBC's Saturday night in the 1990s with shows such as The Generation Game and Big Break, was held in west London on suspicion of sexual offences.

Police officers were seen entering Davidson's house in Hampshire on Wednesday afternoon with clear plastic evidence bags, according to a local news agency.

Davidson "vigorously denies" allegations made against him by two women, his solicitor Henri Brandman said . In a statement, Brandman said: "Two women have made allegations in respect of Jim that date back approximately 25 years. The complainants were then in their mid 20s.

Two women in their mid twenties should mean that it should not be linked with Savile.

I'd love to know what sort of evidence they hope to obtain in those bags with regards to events 25 years ago.

I was thinking much the same. There can't be any corroborating evidence left at all. Whether Davidson is actually guilty or not and even if the CPS decide to proceed, as long as he gets a decent barrister (which he can certainly afford) his chances of being found guilty seem pretty slim to me.

Is it not just standard procedure for the police to take those evidence bags with them whenever they raid anywhere?

Probably none.

He was only funny for a short while, much of his humour was offensive back then, even racist.

Yes. He is very much a traditional English comic from the 70s era, he came in at the end of that era, the racism and sexism fell out of popular humour around the time Davidson hit the mainstream. They were big on the club circuit and cleaned up their act for TV, but they never really climbed above the niveau of the club circuit, which makes them objectionable to today's more mainstream audience.

If you think he is bad, don't bother looking at Roy Chubby Brown or the others on the Northern Circuit! Davidson works relatively tame, compared to some of the "comedians" that appeared in the northern clubs, or even on Blackpool Pier!

And Roy Chubby Brown made his reputation on being too blue for TV. I never saw the attraction.

I think that the public are more aware of the problem now, I doubt that the numbers are up much more than can be explained by population increases. I know girls who were molested by family members years ago. My dad once recounted having a reunion dinner with friends from school who did their national service, and at a RAF reunion my dad was on the top table with Staff Officers and Group Captains, all from the same school. My father left the service after his initial tour of duty and so was the lowest rank at the table, but all of the other guests at that table had been molested by a particular teacher. He discovered that all the guests had been abused by this teacher who left to go to another school where he did the same things but a scandal there resulted in his suicide. So I suspect that the prevalence of sexual predators is no more likely now than then, just that we are more aware of it. Don't forget that Savile managed to keep it covered up because he said that no one would believe the girls. Even decades ago there were public safety campaigns about accepting sweets of lifts from strangers.

If anything, I suspect it's less prevalent now due to greater awareness and easier access to support.

It's been going on since mankind (and womenkind) evolved.

Well, celebrity paedos and pervs are just the tonic the press needed, so not any time soon. And it's become somewhat self-perpetuating since it's obvious that Savile made people stand up.
