Expensive to run compared to?
Straight tap water, yes absolutely but the jug filters are sold as an alternative to buying bulk supplies of bottled water and work out considerably cheaper (for example, using the Tesco website, a 3 pack of Brita Maxtra cartridges can be had for £6.70 and should last a minimum of 3 months/150L (assuming you already have a jug which is a one off purchase), while 12L of tesco own brand water costs £2.10).
I know you can also recycle Brita filters free of charge (they have a freepost returns service). Filters can be dismantled and the contents regenerated and then repackaged so they're unlikely to be significantly worse than a plastic bottle on that front.

It would obviously be vastly better for the environment if everyone just drank tapwater but we don't appear to be there yet.

The water at our old office was truly disgusting. It tasted like mouldy old pond water. It was OK once you'd boiled it, but I actually spat it out the first time I tried it.

Well in which case water filters are a good alternative to tap water. Filter the water and use re-useable bottles. There are plenty of workarounds which are a lot greener than small plastic bottles.

That does nothing to address the problem I've said three times now: there's a limit to what you can carry. The 500ml I carried from home would be gone often before I'd even reached site.

Trust me, bottled water is ridiculously expensive and I'm incredibly tight so I only buy it when there is no alternative. If we had public drinking fountains, then I'd use them instead. But we don't.

At work, we just drank tea or coffee. As I said, the water was OK when it was boiled and personally I'm not a fan of filters - the jug ones are environmentally unfriendly and expensive to run, and I was hardly likely to pay for the rented offices to have a permanent one fitted!

In which case keep existing bottles for use when you need a small volume of water. I will agree with you that the water filters are expensive. I dropped them long ago. I have kept them, just in case, but the only reason I used it was to stop the kettle getting covered in limescale. I now descale it every month with vinegar which is cheaper and more environmentally friendly than other descaling solutions.

I'd love to see the one litre bottle that would fit in my car's cup holders.

Idiots.

I use the sports bottle I got, when I joined the local gym. It fits nicely into the cup holder, not sure how much it hold, I think 0.75L.

I do re-use the existing bottles, but how does that help carrying a days supply around with you? 2 litres of water weighs the same whether it's in one bottle or four, and we do not have public drinking fountains to refill them :?

If my tap water at home was undrinkable, I might consider having a filter fitted. I imagine that would be better than a jug. Luckily I've always had drinkable tap water, so it's not an issue I've needed to investigate in full.

At work, I was able to survive on tea which is my preferred drink if I'm sat at a desk anyway.

When we say 'undrinkable', we simply mean 'I'm too fussy'.
If anyone's tap water in the uk is genuinely undrinkable, I'll get on the phone to Bob Geldof and we'll organise a charity fundraiser to sink boreholes and establish wells in your community.
I had no idea the recession had bitten this hard.

Everyone relax

Water pistols of all sizes are still perfectly legal

Silly law though, water at work is horrible, even through the 'filtered' system so I often end up buying bottled water and refilling the bottles at home

What about the zero tolerance for weapons at various places, such as schools? ;)

Not sure about you but I reuse water bottles hence I'd need a bottle to begin with. Given the concern over leeching, I usually only keep the bottle going for a week max.

I keep mine for about 6 months and then buy new ones. I just re-fill with tap water and put in the fridge as I like my water as cold as possible

I got a water bottle a while back that has a really cool (if you'll excuse the pun) feature. It has a kind of central 'column' which you can remove and freeze. When you want to use the water bottle, you put the now frozen part back in and fill it up with water. It chills the water and keeps it cool as if you've added ice cubes but it melts more slowly. You can then refreeze it again.

Can't remember the brand off the top of my head. I'll have a look this evening.

EDIT : It's a 'Thermos Hydro Active Sports Bottle', they're 6 quid on Amazon if you search for that product.

You must be addicted to BPA's then.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

I'm not convinced re this leeching and think its propaganda put out by the water bottle Co's

As the bottle is re-used and generally the water is used within a week or so (and then refilled) I recon that it will have less BPA's than a new bottle that might have been sitting in a warehouse for months
