Don't forget that they shut down industry for a while to clear the air for the Olympics. They are clearly aware that it will make them look bad, hence the pressure on the US to not publish the results.

Sounds like they are catching up with the West. London went through that last century.

Well there were a number of bad smogs in London. The Chinese are going through many decades of improvements in one or two. It would not surprise me that in ten years time that they are as clean as the west.
