Instagram User Numbers Down; Updated Terms of Service in Effect This Week

Quote:
Instagram’s updated Terms of Service and Privacy Policy takes effect Saturday, the company reminded its users in e-mails sent Tuesday. At the same time, AppStats data shows the photo-sharing app has lost around 42 percent of its daily active users in the last month.

Oops.

Wow, 42% is a massive reaction. I honestly didn't think most people really cared!

C'mon, these are my picture of food, and my feet, and my cat wearing glasses.

Not a surprise, I closed my account after reading their updated Terms of Service.

Another annoyance is the fact that they've disabled the ability for photos to display in Twitter posts, meaning you have to click an extra link to see a photo stored on Instagram. I thought this was a quirk of my web browser at first, but read an article that says it was a deliberate action on Instagram's part...

Hardy surprising considering Facebook own them! Tit for tat gets you nowhere.

It will have also reduced their traffic as these were the major users. Those left will be those who do not read Terms and Conditions.

Exactly, if I now see a tweet in my Twitter timeline with an Instagram link, instead of what used to show the actual photo, then I simply don't usually bother clicking the link. All this has achieved is, like you say, reduced traffic to their site.

Instagram's reasoning was that they wanted people to visit their site to view the photos, but it's probably having the opposite effect as it's one extra click that most people can't be arsed to do just to see someone's lunch or photo of their cat/dog/hamster.

By all means they can have a private disagreement between themselves and Twitter, but that's just cutting their own nose off to spite their face!

The people who will have left would be the ones posting pictures every day so the numbers of pictures could be down even more. Those left were the occasional user and so would not be adding that much to the overall stock of photos.
