Blockbuster goes into administration

Following Comet, HMV and Jessops, Blockbuster is the next to go into administration. More from the BBC here. The chain has 528 stores and employs 4,190 staff.

Not surprising really in the face of online options. Our local one closed quite a while ago.

Someone just said the other day, as news of HMV broke, that Blockbusters will be next, and here we are.

I doubt that they will be the last. Many stores will close over the next few years, and even more shop fronts will become empty. Most have struggled since 2008, and I do not see things improving for the rest for a long time.

I was thinking of cancelling their online service, this might have made the decision for me

Does anyone else think Deloitte turns up more like the Mob than the administrator?

All liquidators/administrators have the same attitude. They literally go in and grab everything for sale so that they can get their fees at least.

Have to admit I'm surprised they lasted this long. It's not much more expensive to buy the DVDs, never mind the online services.

My local Blockbuster vanished a some time ago and is now a Tesco Metro or Express. I hadn't set foot in there for many years.

I get the distinct impression they may be lurking outside the boardrooms of beleaguered retail corporations..

I only ever once stepped foot into a Blockbuster and that was to rent a movie on a night in as a student with friends. We had already gone through everyone's DVD collection, so we went to Blockbuster. Never been before nor since.

Got an email...

In short there should be no impact on your Blockbuster By Post service as a result of the appointment of the Joint Administrators to the Companies.

Nice :D

Haven't been in a Blockbuster now for about 12 years.

Trouble is they did not keep up with the growth of demand via the web and when they did they were about 5 years too late.

For me it was about the same time. I used to get a lot of bargain clearance DVD's from them.
