Can't help thinking that he'll be looking for at least a fudge for that $10m. And I hope he's going to include TV, books, music, films etc

Why don't you spend the money on a young peoples' mental health campaign aimed at parents, eh? Not that it's just younger people, but if you must cloud the issue before you've even started...

Unfortunately, this is his realpolitik. If he wants to stand any chance at all of getting any sort of gun ownership regulations through, he's got to throw the pro-gun lobby a bone. This is that bone. In fact he's done quite well because he hasn't actually promised them anything concrete. He's promised to throw a tiny amount of money (relative to the US federal budget) at research into it without having to guarantee any particular result. It could well backfire on the NRA (oh the irony) if the research shows the link isn't there, or is tenuous or complex.

I suspect he's had to give the political conservatives something else that we haven't heard about yet. That may turn out to be something more valuable. But if it keeps nutters with assault rifles out of schools, maybe whatever it is is a price worth paying.

I saw a post on Twitter last night. The lot complaining about the suggested background checks are the same people demanding birth certificates and other forms of proof of existence from Obama.

I note that the NRA is going on about Obama having armed guards and why can’t the rest of America have them too?

Yes but the majority of Americans do not have NRA members trying to shoot them.

The average person does not get multiple death threats every year, unless you are really annoying. The US president probably gets more simply because of who he is rather than as any US individual.

Quote:
FrequencyThe first prosecutions under the statute, enacted in 1917, occurred during the highly charged, hyperpatriotic years of World War I, and the decisions handed down by the courts in these early cases reflected intolerance for any words demonstrating even a vague spirit of disloyalty.[8][9] There was a relative moratorium on prosecutions under this statute until the World War II era. The number increased during the turbulent Vietnam War era. They have tended to fall when the country has not been directly embroiled in a national crisis situation.[10]

The number of reported threats rose from 2,400 in 1965 to 12,800 in 1969.[11] According to some reports, President George W. Bush received about 3,000 threats a year, while his successor Barack Obama received about four times that many.[12] This figure has been disputed by Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan, who says that Obama receives about as many threats as the previous two Presidents.[13]

According to the U.S. Attorneys' Manual, "Media attention given to certain kinds of criminal activity seems to generate further criminal activity; this is especially true concerning Presidential threats which is well documented by data previously supplied by the United States Secret Service. For example, in the six-month period following the March 30, 1981, attempt on the life of President Reagan, the average number of threats against protectees of the Secret Service increased by over 150 percent from a similar period during the prior year." For this reason, the agency recommends considering the use of sealed affidavits to keep news of threats from leaking to the press.[3]

Then when he leaves office he will be under secret service protection for life. Maybe at a reduced level but there will still be crazies who will try something stupid. At least in the US the president can only stand for two terms as president before standing down.
