Just caught the christams special on iplayer.

I don't know if it was because we've been starved of Doctor Who for a while, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I can see the the new companion fitting in very well.

I've said for a few years now that the Doctor Who "specials" haven't, in my opinion, been that special, but I did enjoy this one.

I'll not say why at this stage, to avoid spoilers, but John approves, as do Mrs. Vella and Brooke.

I've missed most of the Christmas special twice now due to acts of Brother.
One for iPlayer me thinks.

What I did see seemed quite good though.

I enjoyed it. I think it works better as it is part of a greater narrative, not a stand alone episode.

That's a good point.
For the first time the Christmas Special has been part of something other than itself.
The half-season that came before set the mood of the piece and what happened during will carry forward to the second half of that season starting at Easter.
I also liked the way the show wasn't solely about The Doctor.
We had Madame Vastra (with the best line of the show) with Jenny and Strax who almost had to be reintroduced to the audience again, then we also had Oswin and a bit of a neglected (on the outside) TARDIS with a super interior redesign.

And if that lot wasn't enough, we had Richard E. Grant who was woefully underused in the episode but what he did he did very well indeed.
I seem to recall the Great Intellegence from past Who episodes, but my memory of it is as sketchy as The Doctor's is so I'm going to need to resort to looking up past Who villains to pinpoint where I know it from.

Still, cracking good fun.
Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Mark

Loved it, and introduced my Danish friend who was pleasantly surprised. I loved the fact that it was part of the larger arc and I could really get into that, but Gabi could watch it in isolation and really enjoy it. Also, superb performances all round. And I LOVE the new TARDIS.

(Oh and Mark, massively off topic, but everybody in Italy uses Nikon and you can't even buy Canon in the biggest city here for 100km, jus' sayin').

They still have to beat her arrangement of the Doctor Who theme.

Nice article. I'd never considered that it was pre-synthesiser:

each individual note was trimmed to length by cutting the tape, and stuck together in the right order

That's a lot of splicing!
