A pair of glasses dubbed a "privacy visor" has been developed to thwart hidden cameras using facial-recognition software.

The prototype spectacles have been designed by scientists at Tokyo's National Institute of Informatics.

In November, it emerged some shop mannequins were collecting data on shoppers using facial-recognition software.

The EyeSee mannequin logs the age, gender and race of passers-by through a camera hidden behind one eye.

I saw that but it looks a bit impractical to use on a daily basis. The best thing I read was that tilting your head by 15* to one side fools the software into thinking you don't have a face!

Yeah, I had visions of all the anon shoppers with crinked necks. Of course, most anons don't go clothes shopping!

As long as you know where the camera is. What if they have cameras at a number of positions so if you tilt your head 15 degrees then while you avoid one camera you come out perfectly on another?

But that would require other cameras to be aligned at different angles. In all likelihood, they will all be aligned horizontally.

Yes but if it where in a corridor it could be much easier to have them at multiple positions and heights to make it impossible to get through without triggering at least one camera.

It's not the position or height, it's the angle. But if I saw a corridor with many manikins mounted at all different angles all along it, then I'd be too freaked out to walk down it anyway!

Easily solved. Put them all behind one way mirrors. That way you cannot see where the cameras are and the vain ones will spend ages admiring themselves in the mirror and will definitely be recognised.

The government might simply arrest all with such masks.

Arresting a person for wearing a mask? That won't make them look silly at all. Are they going to arrest all the dummies in November?

Well they can arrest people entering banks with helmets, though banks are a special case compared to the locations that these will be used in.

Didn't precisely that happen recently? My memory isn't good so I forget which country it was, but I remember that mask specifically carried very high penalties as being anti-government or something.
