I seem to be stuck in limbo with my phone at the monent.
Almost three years ago I got a HTC Desire (the original one with physical buttons). Last year, after my two year contract ran out, I got a year long sim only contract. My line rental went down from £30 to £13 for teh same calls/data package.
In the last few months two of the buttons have started to intermittantly not work. Also I've run out of room to install more apps as many have to go on the phone's internal storage and can't be moved to the SD card (which still has 2GB of space).
In short I need a new phone, but this leaves me with a problem. Trying to find a new phone at a reasonable price.
I've looked at buying a Pay As You Go phone, but they're terrible unless you pay a lot of cash (the cheap ones have really low resolution screens, even compared to my three year old phone).
I'd thought about waiting to see what 4G compatable phones come out this year then getting them on contract. But it could be ages until proper 4G phones and contracts are available .
Another option is just to get another new 3G phone on contract, but they're all two year contracts, which means I wouldn't be able to benifit from 4G when it comes along later this year.

So what to do, what to do?

Vodafone have an offer just for you:

It will cost you but you'll get a new 4G phone from it later

I have seen that, but you're still paying for a service you won't use for quite a bit of the time.
Plus I had a play with a mate's Samsung smartphone. I found it less user friendly than my HTC and there was a major bug with it's alarm clock.

I think I'll stick it out for a couple of months and see if any new 4G comes come onto the market.

I've decided to forget 4G for a couple of years. It'll be almost a year until most networks have it anyway.
I'm going to go for a full two year contract on either a HTC One X, S or a Huawei. Though all the Huawei's I've looked at so far online have very low amounts of internal storage.

To be honest, the 4G bench tests have been variable. There's every chance that by this time next year. 4G will actually be slower than 3G in many areas. The speed you connect at is almost irrelevant when the contention is so high.

I am not that bothered for now with 4G either. I get nearly get nearly 20 Mbits on my iPhone so 3G is already better than my broadband. 4G might be more important in a few years but for me for now it is unnecessary.

I went for the HTC One X+ on a two year contract in the end. The phone was supposed to be £49 on the contract I picked, but Vodafone said I could have it for free as I'd been with them for ages. :D
It'll be here tomorrow.

As long as it does what you want and are happy with it that is all that matters.
