Went to the Shard’s viewing levels on Saturday. It was phenomenal - the weather was clear and we could see the whole of London and beyond. Apparently, you can see 40 miles away - I reckon I was the QEII bridge on the horizon to the East.

We were also treated to a sunset, which was spectacular to watch - there was a haze over Battersea, and you got these shadows cast by the buildings. Look for Battersea Power Station.

And as it got dark, we watched the city light up and the colours change from the greys and muted browns of the day to the blues and golds of disk, finally to the light show that London puts on at night.

I’ve never seen London like this before. It was the second day the viewing gallery was open to the public, so we are amongst the first to see this. The viewing gallery itself has two levels - one full enclosed, and one open to the elements - it was cold, but added to the experience of being up in the sky, exposed to the elements.

This was a wedding present from a friend. We’ve had the tickets for over six months pinned to the notice board, and well worth the wait.

Here’s my Flickr set of photos from the day. I also took some video which I hope to cut into something good over the next few days.

I wonder how much money the London Eye is going to loose now that has opened?

Very nice indeed.
I certainly fancy a trip up the shard with my camera.

Thank you, all. I am rather happy that the video footage I took of that particular scene came out well too. :D

Did you notice any restrictions on the type of gear you were allowed to take with you?

Well, before I went, I emailed them knowing full well that some venues have restrictions on cameras. Here is the reply I got:

Quote:
Thank you for your email to The View from The Shard.

We fully encourage our guests to take photographs from The View - we do not permit photography or filming for commercial use (this must be authorised by the press team press@theviewfromtheshard.com),and we do not allow the use of tripods, or similar kit.

If you have any specific enquiries about the kit you wish to use, or the type of photography you wish to do, then please do let us know prior to your visit.

If you have any further questions please do email us.

So, really, take what you want but check in advance if you want to do anything specialist.

The were lots of cameras there. The tourists with their Nikon DSLRs, the more serious Canon users ( sniggers ), as well as stacks of phones and I even saw some iPads being used. One lady was using FaceTime on her iPhone to show her friends the view.

I had assumed that tripods would be out (a bit anti-social in a viewing gallery, even a big one).
Were all your shots hand held or did you balance the camera on something (especially the night shots)?
