The beer belly is a myth, study claims

Quote:
In fact beer, the country’s national drink, has nutritional and wellbeing benefits similar to wine when consumed in moderation, it is claimed.
Nutritionist Dr Kathryn O’Sullivan, who carried out the review of the scientific review, believes that swapping beverages for beer may actually be a sensible way to diet.
Although the industry-sponsored research may seem incredible to some it in fact adds to an emerging body of thought that the beer belly is a myth.
Beer has fewer calories per 100ml than wine, spirits, and even orange juice, it is claimed.
“Unfortunately beer has this image as a high-calorie, high-fat drink,” Dr O’Sullivan told The Times. “It is very unfair.”

What a pointless thing to say. You might drink 100ml of spirits (2 doubles) or even of wine or fruit juice (a really small glass) but who would pour themselves 0.2 pints of beer?

One unit of any beer has more calories than one unit of spirits. Not much more, but it is more.

Q: How many calories would a typical man (from experience) with the purported 'beer belly' consume from his surely 8+ pints average night? Add that to the sedentary lifestyle of someone who spends day and night in the local working mans club and I would argue that in fact the beer belly IS a real thing.

P.S. 8 pints of John Smith's is 1224 calories, Guinness is 1680 and Stella is 2048.

Beer is a high calorie drink. If you want a low cal one, look at something like vodka. The problem is that this is industry-sponsored. Would this have been published if it had shown beer to be in a negative light? I doubt it.

The entire "beer belly" is supposed to be part of the apple-shaped distribution (this in itself is in doubt IIRC) of fat in those who are predisposed to heart disease. It is caused by an excess consumption of calories which is then converted to precious fat for storage. It doesn't have to be beer or even alcohol related.

I am a very low drinker so for me it is not going to be the equivalent of a days eating. Though for some I know that will be breakfast.
