For the first time in at least 3-4 years (IIRC), I took a walk down the street to the local "cornershop" supermarket. It's only half a mile but I normally drive in other directions to other shops. This local supermarket used to be profitable (£1m turnover/yr - I worked there as a general labourer) but has fallen down since it was taken over in terms of price and quality.

Anyway, for some reason I've only just noticed that the local bakery has been shut (for some time). Heaven knows when the local butcher shut down. The local barbers have also shut. The local greengrocers I recall being taken over by a local car audio shop a decade ago.

Local shops are a matter of use them or lose them.

Completely useless but fun. Part of how to keep an idiot amused series, I will be back in three days. I need to see if there is anywhere that the pointer does not find.

I heard that recently that some people deliberately break their kit at work to get an upgrade.

Just had an email today from the PA of a VIP saying his phone headset was broken and he wants one of the posh new ones that some of the VIPs have got.

I have visions of him stamping on his headset lol.

Brilliant for crowd control. $25k to buy but how much to upgrade to working standard? ;)

Coca-Cola drinking 'linked to New Zealander's death'

Quote:
Drinking large quantities of Coca-Cola was a "substantial factor" in the death of a 30-year-old woman in New Zealand, a coroner has said.

Natasha Harris, who died three years ago after a cardiac arrest, drank up to 10 litres of the fizzy drink each day. This is twice the recommended safe limit of caffeine and more than 11 times the recommended sugar intake.

Ms Harris drank Coke throughout her waking hours and her teeth had been removed because of decay.

More from the BBC here.

Careful, pcernie!

It's quite a common thing amongst the VP's at our place, one of them gets a new toy and everyone wants to get upgraded, I've had everything from "accidentally" leaving a Blackberry on the roof of a car, to "accidentally" dropping an ipad on a marble tiled floor.

CLICKY
Quote:
A duo of Empire-hating rebels have realised the Kickstarter Death Star is a threat to the Rebel Alliance and they're looking for all like-minded galactic citizens to chip in for a fleet of $11m X-Wings.

Mechanical engineer Simon and his startup-founding buddy Ed reckon gnut.co.uk, the unnamed folks behind the crowdsourcing project to raise $850qn to build the planet-sized ship, is a "subversive tactics unit of the evil Galactic Empire" engaged in an ingenious plot to use the power of the people for nefarious reasons.

"We can't let this new Death Star go unchallenged, so we're raising funds to form a new Rebel Alliance and construct a fleet of proton torpedo armed X-Wing fighters to take down this new Death Star," the pair said on their Kickstarter page.

I'd have thought building an x-wing would be relatively simple. A couple of canards at the front to correct for the centre of gravity being wrong and you're almost there.
