Sound City -

A documentary about the Sound City recording studio in Los Angeles.
A really nice documentary, perhaps a couple of slips along the way, but they're minor and to be honest, I'd have left them in too.
The film looks at the history of the studio and the mixing desk that was pivotal to it's success. Really touching, funny and well worth a look.

Anyone seen Wild Bill yet? Saw it at the weekend and really enjoyed it. Great debut from Dexter Fletcher - engrossing story, well acted and realistic characters.

Luke-warm recommendation for Looper.
It was by no means brilliant, or "This decade's Matrix" - but it was worth the watch for the Rainmaker alone.

Recent movies :

Horrible Bosses : Utter dross
Savages : Surprisingly unexpected plot (not what I thought it was going to be at all) but still quite good
Resident Evil 5 : A crime
The Sweeney : A pretty standard, made for TV movie, with only one standout action scene, otherwise, not much going from it.
The Campaign : Fairly tame effort from Ferrel et al, a few standout rib-ticklers, but nothing consistent.
Searching for Sugar Man : More documentary than film, but very interesting all the same.
Enter The Void : Gaspar Noe's not everyone's cup of tea, by any stretch of the imagination, but I happen to really really like his work - and I really "enjoyed" this.

...I also got half way through Anna Karenina whilst babysitting recently, but my godson demanded attention so I had to park it for another day - wonderfully shot/staged - with honourable performances from Jude Law (!) and Keira looking as delightful as ever...will finish it another time v.soon.

I''m reading the book before I watch it, but considering I have A LOT of Hitchens to get through first and Karenina isn't thin herself, bless her, that could be in some time.

I've not seen any of those films you mention, I started watching Searching for Sugar Man but realised it wasn't QUITE interesting enough to warrant not doing job applications... it's waiting on my hard disk (been listening to the album). Documentaries ARE films and deserve to be in people's "Top [X]" lists.

Shame about The Sweeney. The casting seemed wrong from the word go but the trailer looked OK. Might give it a go but it's not a priority. I'd still see Resident Evil 5 though. :)

Have you seen The Guard? I think you may like it if not.

I'm looking forward to seeing that one. I'm a fan of Brendan Gleeson or Mad Eye Moody as he's better known.

Saw Ted on the plane and didn't rate it at all. I was expecting a lot more from Seth McFarlane. It was Paul with a teddy bear and nowhere near as funny.

Really enjoyed RED, The Artist, Friends with Kids, Flawless and the Descendants. Was hoping to enjoy the Iron Lady but actually turned it off half way through.

RED is great fun, and I'm hoping the sequel even comes close to it :)

I haven't got watching many films recently, it's all been TV shows (currently on The Batman after attempting Justified).

Just back from seeing Chasing Ice.
It's not a film that I can say I 'like', but I can certainly appreciate what it took to get made.
As someone who has done film work, stills photography and mountaineering I can understand the drive of the guy in wanting to get this made as a document of how the global amount of ice is vanishing at an increasingly rapid pace.
It's a moving film with beautiful visuals and a dire message.

I've had a bit of a catch up with some relatively recent superhero movies over the last week or so:

Captain America: Liked this one and the WW2 setting differentiated it from similar movies. 7.5 out of 10

Thor: It was OK but overall a bit disappointing. Not sure why, it just didn't come together very well IMO. 6 out of 10.

Avengers: Didn't quite live up to all the hype but still very good entertainment. If I was 12 years old I'd probably think it was the best movie ever. 8.5 out of 10.

+1 to all that. The first half of America's style wasn't carried over into the second, but then it rarely is with origin movies.

Thor seemed to be just a bridge for Marvel on film really.

I was pleasantly surprised just how well Avengers worked; I'm hoping the sequel is at least as good now we have the introductions out of the way. Hopefully a better ending too ;)

Saw Django last night.

It's a love story where nearly everyone gets their head blown off.

There - saved 3 hours of your life.

Not really. I'll still be seeing it, just not this weekend as I'll hopefully be seeing Cloud Atlas and then Die Hard 5.

What happened to the spoiler alert?

So its a love story then? Is it a date movie or just for girls? ;)
