Quorn? Or possibly personal DNA testing kits

No, a tracking and quality system for slaughter houses, which stores all of the classification data, directly from the devices, in a database in unalterable form against the slaughter number. The information can be traced back to the originating farm and the classification information would immediately show up any anomalies.

The problem is, that we thought that we already had such a system in place.

You've probably just noticed it. They've been advertising a lot over the last two years, if anything they've tailed off recently. I've noticed as my wife's a veggie and we have a lot of it in the house and I used to be a shareholder.

Iceland boss blames councils

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-21490004

Erm, your supposedly robust system means what the councils do shouldn't make any difference, doesn't it? Oh, and I doubt what you're selling is any better than any other store for the price...

The FSA said it has submitted a "full file" on its horsemeat investigation to Europol - the EU's law enforcement agency - and the information is being analysed in 35 countries, in Europe and elsewhere.

On Friday, Ms Brown said the agency had not brought any of its own prosecutions so far, but she did not rule out future legal action.

So that would be none in future either.

I've noticed the quorn advertising over the past few months and certainly before the horsemeat scandal.

I can understand since the crisis, but before? Are you suggesting that Quorn sabotaged the entire european food processing set up?

I have never been sure about what is in that meat. So for it to have horse rather than lamb would not surprise me.

The meat used in doner varies in different regions, as does the bread and salad. Over here, the lamb "sausage" is most common. In Germany, veal and cabbage are common.

Entirely plausible. How else do you drive people to eat quorn? Make them doubt ALL meat. Soon enough something else will have been passed off chicken.

In some respects as long as they do not try and increase the price too much Quorn has the advantage that it is cheaper to produce than most meat. Not sure if it is cheaper than chicken. I try to limit the amount of red meat that I eat anyway, plus make my own meals from ingredients. Though I do cheat and use mince from the supermarket at times. I am not so fussed about horse meat, apart from the Bute risk, it is the labelling problem that it creates that is my concern. When the EU banned mechanically recovered meat the supermarkets should have adjusted their prices then and so allowed manufacturers to provide the ready meals without having to cheat and still make a profit.

I don't know if you've watched the ads, but their angle of attack, which I thought rather clever, is to promote the lack of fat.

Interestingly, (or not depending on how much of a trivia fan you are) quorn was never designed to be aimed at veggies, it was because in the 60s they thought that the world would not be able to provide enough meat for the growing world population. It turned out that by the time it was ready for market, there was still enough meat, so they marketed it at veggies. Now they're marketing as a healthy alternative to meat.

I have certain Luddite worries about its sciencey processedness, but I do think it's rather an amazing product.

Having tried it a number of ways the best way is in the finished version, like cutlets. I never managed to get Quorn blocks to taste that good in anything that I prepared. Burger King have a bean burger and I really like that. The lack of fat is also very handy for those on a diet.

I found the "cutlets" quite horrible. The texture is so wrong.

I do use the mince some times, but only when on special because it's so much cheaper to just buy minced mammal! I often buy minced turkey (not a mammal I know...) and mutton, both of which are dearer than beef but still cheaper than Quorn.

Generally though, I'd say if you want a meat substitute then just use mushrooms, lentils and beans as appropriate. Fried mushrooms are great in a hot-dog roll with onion and mustard, or in a doner with chilli and salad for example.
