It has now happened to Mac Office Users. I had better start learning how to use Apple's Pages and Numbers Apps. The transition was too complicated for me, so I abandoned the idea.

Most of the time if I want to type stuff Text Edit will do fine for me. If I want more control over the layout then I'll fire up InDesign or Quark XPress.

If someone sends me a Word document most of the time I can see it well enough for what I need (normally to be able to extract the text out of it) in either Pages or Open Office. On the few occasions that this has been insufficient, I've been able to get them to resend it as a PDF.

I'll be a happy man if I never need to use PowerPoint ever again. The last time I used it I discovered that the Mac version didn't actually do what I wanted (although the Windows version did), and the time before was to make templates for a client. IMO MS couldn't have made the process by which you add a background from an external image to a master slide any more complicated if you'd deliberately tried.

The only time I ever need Excel, is for one client who send all their poly bag cutter guides in this format! Numbers or Open Office open these documents well enough.

I have all the Apple office apps but really just need to convert to them. Memory problems make it a much slower process than people expect. Even simple things are harder. I have started with Keynote as I never really had to deal with Powerpoint so no unlearning process to go through.

Hmm, all of my Office 2010 licences are non transferable as well.

They brought this out with Office 2010 with the media-less versions of Office - you buy just a licence card and either turn the "Starter" version (Word and Excel with adverts) into the full product, or you have to find a copy of the install image somewhere.

This was about 100€ cheaper than the "full package" version.

Most people bought the key version, because their new PC came with Starter pre-installed and they saved 100€...

This was "so popular", that Microsoft have dropped the media versions of Office 2013, so the licensing hasn't changed for 2013 versions, compared to 2010, except that the more expensive media versions aren't available any more.

Microsoft has been trying to get mass adoption of the rental model for years. I do not think that this will be accepted well. Many organisations are running on much older hardware and software and they will simply switch to another program. Maybe Wordperfect?

Standard practice. Very few customers all have the same versions of software

Hence the commonly heard expression "I can't open that, can you re-send it as a .doc?"

Welcome to my world

I try and keep my machines on the latest OS, but it is enough for my tiny brain to deal with. It is one reason why I do not regret switching to macs.

We use thin clients connected to Windows Server and Linux boxes.

I got the Office 365 subscription the other day.

It was a little awkward, because my Hotmail account is from 1996 (pre-Microsoft) in the UK and I bought Office 365 from Amazon Germany with a German credit card, but the only language option was English... But once I had signed up, I could chose to install the German version.

With the special offers over the years, plus the Office 365 addition, I now have 50GB of SkyDrive space, which should be more than enough for my needs.

The new Office has some nice features and the streaming install is nice, now installed on my laptop and my tablet, as well as my iMac.
