The man who designed one of science fiction's most famous villains, the Dalek, has died at the age of 84.

In 1963 Ray Cusick was asked to create a race of aliens for a new programme called Doctor Who.

The Daleks proved to be a sensation and have reappeared throughout the near 50 years of the show's history.

Doctor Who.
You'd think the BBC at least could get this right.

It would be fracking cool if the BBC introduced a Dalek that looked like the original sketch.

It's a design that is more of the 1950s than the 1960s, but I like it and I'd like to see it made real.

They could pass it off like Star Trek : TNG (or was it DS9?) did when Worf said 'we do not talk about it' when the other crew members wanted to know about the evolution of the Klingons from the original series to the way he looked. (8+)

Then they explained it in Enterprise.

It could be an early prototype - Travel Machine Mk1. Thinking in retrospect, they could have snuck it into the Asylum. Ho hum.

At this point, it'd be best to do it in an alternate timeline story.

There was an episode with Tom Baker on Skaro with Davros at the creation of the Daleks and so they were pretty much as they are today with a few changes.

Davros referred to the Dalek as the “Mark 3 Travel Machine” (a wiki type link just in case you lot don’t believe me http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Dalek). This implies that there would be two previous models that we have not seen. One of those could well be the original design.

So, no need to “fork” the story. There is scope in the Dalek timeline for a Mark 1 Travel Machine. Assume that the mutated Kaled inside went mental operating it (and coming to terms with its mutation) could have qualified it as an inmate in the Asylum. Indeed, the first inmates of the Asylum could well have been occupants of Mark 1 travel machines.

I think too much.

You are probably right they could do an episode with earlier prototype editions.

They could have Davros “pre incident” - ie whatever thing went wrong to cripple him. Who knows, the prototypes could have done it.
