I suspect that this has been known about for months and the Tory press are now desperate to try and help the flagging Tory election chances in Eastleigh where they are currently predicted to do badly.

Can’t expect either of these parties to do well. I’m expecting a drubbing of both coalition parties - there may be no clear winner either.

There'll be a clear winner - first past the post & all that. I agree it might not be any of the big three though, assuming any independent is planning to stand. Or UKIP, which would be bad but has a sense of inevitability about it.

Seriously though, if you actually wanted to become an MP but don't want to subscribe to the party system, now is as good a time to stand as any. You get a massively well aid job for at least a couple of years, can make a lot of contacts along the way and right now quite a lot of people would vote for a monkey provided it offered an alternative to the usual suspects.

The Liberals are expected to win but Tories need to win seats like this to have any chance of a general election next time, and with the Liberals as low in the polls as they are if they cannot win now they do not have a chance of winning an election next time around. That means another coalition at the least.

I wonder if it goes far enough will the party use this to ditch Clegg.

It is looking more like he had some knowledge some years ago. So like our anger at the cardinals we need to have Clegg charged with aiding and abetting a sexual predator. All that seems to have happened is that they let him leave till the stink died down, and dropped the investigation.
