Before you do all that - I just had a quick look at one of your links, and it seems it's connected using MTP. It was transparent to me because I'm on Windows 7, and I'd never even heard of it!

It's the protocol old school media players like the Zune used to connect with Windows Media Player. At least, that's the only time I've seen it used before now..

So yeah, no mass storage option. Not an issue for me, but I can see how it might be.

'Tis for me, because Macs don't do MTP.

It's totally vanilla. Only had it a week and not found any problems that would call for rooting.

It's a very nice tablet. On sheer VFM, probably the best tablet on the market. All tech has glitches, just this one caught me out.

Without wishing to stay off topic, the full explanation makes sense even if it's no help: clicky
So basically, you're looking for a phone with an SD slot.

It's one of the things I'm considering, certainly although I rather agree with their reasoning TBH - I had an old android 2 phone with barely any internal storage and having to constantly move stuff between internal and SD storage was a major pain.

However the new way of doing things makes getting a large mass of data (e.g. music and movies or lots of photos) on or off a bit of a pain. I didn't know about the transfer app Veato mentioned unfortunately and Sony also do their own app for the same purpose on a Mac.

I still need to actually get my hands on the HTC One and the Xperia before I make my mind up. The former isn't due in the shops for a couple of weeks.

I'm a fan of HTC's. My One X+ is great.
Though for the price the Nexus has to be up there...... if you can get one.
