Wrong meat in curries in Scotland is 'widespread practice' |  |  |  | Quote: A leading bacteriologist has said he believes the practice of substituting lamb with beef is widespread in Indian restaurants and takeaways in Scotland.
Professor Hugh Pennington was speaking after a report, published in the Sunday Mail, said low quality beef was passed off as lamb in one in three curries tested by the Food Standards Agency.
Prof Pennington said he had been aware of the issue for years.
He said it was potentially a bigger scandal than the use of horsemeat.
The Scottish Food Enforcement Liaison Committee - which is part of the FSA - carried out tests in 129 Indian restaurants and takeaways north of the border.
It said cheap beef was passed off as lamb in 46 of those premises. In 33 of those, there was no lamb in the dishes, while the remaining 13 used some lamb and cheap cuts of beef.
The premises were not identified in the report, which said: "The results from the survey confirm that a significant proportion of lamb-based curries offered for sale in Indian, and similar style, restaurants and takeaways were falsely described as they contained either no lamb, or a mixture of lamb and other meat.
"The sale of such curries contravenes the Food Safety Act and the Food Labelling Regulations.
"These results confirm that the misdescription of lamb-based meals among Indian and similar style catering premises is an ongoing issue."
Hugh Pennington, emeritus professor of bacteriology at the University of Aberdeen, told the BBC: "There's been intelligence about it for a number of years, so there's nothing new about it.
"Quite a large amount of testing has been done, which has shown the scale of the problem.
"It's a bit like the horsemeat issue - it's fraud. Rather than one or two traders in Europe defrauding people, this is local and on a grander scale." |  |  |  |  |

I wonder how wide spread it is in the rest of Britain. I'm guessing there's not that many Hindus outside England, but that kind of substitution really leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
I had a "lamb curry" at a hotel in Welsh Wales, and it tasted exactly like beef stew. The labelling was very specific that it was made from local Welsh sheeps. That was a particularly bad place though. The vegetable pasta had no vegetables in either.

I suspect that it is very common in a lot of restaurants. In takeaways where it says meat curry, you wonder what it could be, probably horse, but that is not so bad as long as it is meat. It is simple fraud unless it says meat curry which covers everything apart from fish. Though I suspect that it is increasingly common with a slow economy. I must admit that I prefer curries where I can at least identify the meat or fish, such as prawn curry.

Given that the cow is a holy animal in India, they could get into real problems, if they are trying to pass off beef as lamb.

Well many of the restaurants are run by Hindu's so they probably do not care. Though I know of Muslims who eat pork and other non halal meat but do not care. Even so they are all just as affected by these meat scandals.

A lot of them say meat rather than lamb, but I've always assumed that could be covering for mutton. I always order meat rather than chicken as it's never happy chicken and it's never tasted of beef to me always lamb (or more likely mutton and possibly goat).
Doesn't really matter to me as I like mutton and goat.

I've always understood that "Meat" is supposed to be mutton.
You pay a premium for goat.

I'm betting this is a global practice, and restaurants have probably been increasing the quantity of mystery meat in their dishes for years, in an effort to remain profitable. Eating out is going to be a very, very, occasional treat, once this lot is sorted out - prices are going to rocket.

I think that for a lot of people eating out is already a luxury, and that will get worse over the next couple of years. Prices will increase but that will only really impact the small restaurant. Places like top London restaurants will not be effected at all. It is those lower down the price scale that will feel the squeeze. Though many will probably drop the lamb dishes if they feel that they are not getting what they bought, though they will be relieved that it is meat.
