So there's a new elected leader of a nation that is responsible for not allowing condoms to be used in a world riddled with aids, hiding the people who are responsible for the raping of small children the world over, the banning of gay marriage, and a few other thousand crimes I could mention.
But hey, just as long as he keep his Argie nose out of the Falklands.

Catholicism is not a nation </pedant>. If it were it would have a different level of legitimacy.

Sadly, he has publicly stated an opinion (guess which one) about this already. Not that he has any influence over the matter even now.

Yay! I'm so pleased that they've elected a new head honch, so they can continue to do the bang-up they've managed so far; sheltering sex pests and condemning the ignorant to disease and death. Wonderful stuff. So uplifting.

How long before he faces his first big scandal?

Maybe we should be nice and give him a chance to have breakfast.

But Vatican City is, and he's head of state.

You think it'll take that long for a scandal? ;)

I am not accusing him but thinking of the rest of them.

No time at all!

Already whispers that he turned a blind eye when the Junta in Argentina were arresting and torturing people including his own Jesuit priests.

Well that is an old story. Nothing new though. Though if he was involved in some financial scandal that would be a new one.

Argentine woman reveals she snubbed marriage proposal from Pope Francis

Quote:
Speaking to Argentine television, the woman, who has so far only been identified as Amalia, said the young Jorge Mario Bergoglio had told her "if I can't marry you, I'll become a priest."

Speaking from her home in Flores, an emotional Amalia said that the "romance" with the future Pope Francis did not prosper because of the opposition of her parents.

I wonder if the opposition was because he would never amount to much.

My brother was wondering when the Vatican armada would be dispatched to seize control of the Falklands.
In all seriousness, I hope the new pope stays right out of that one.

'Paedophilia is illness' - SA priest http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-21810980

I'm starting to support their 'put them all on an island' idea, actually. I wouldn't even nuke it, I'd unleash the most horrific disease going. And prats like the above get a free flight if they keep up their BS.

TBH most people who commit crimes generally do so without the explicit intention of simply breaking the law. Whether it's rape, paedophilia, murder etc. People generally don't go "I want to break the law - which one should I break?". Bear in mind that the law is an arbitarily defined "thing" (can't think of a better word). You don't get these laws in nature.

Hence people who do something will do it for a particular reason, irrespective of the law (there is a subset of people who seek in behaviour purely for the taboo/illegal nature rather than the act itself).

Having encoutered paedophiles in my training, they seem to think their desires are "normal" to them. Some choose to recognise that it's not normal and try to abstain or self-harm in attempt to escape the situation. You could argue that they are pariahed in the same way that some gay people used to be. Others don't see anything wrong. All of the paedos I've encountered state they have been molested as children. I don't know whether this warps their view to the point where they think it's okay to do the same.

I suspect they need help and rehabilitation in the same way people who are drug addicts receive help. The problem is that there's no "cure".

Being a paedophile is no more illegal than being a heterosexual male. Abusing children is illegal, as is assaulting grown women. You can't criminalise a state of mind, only actions, otherwise you criminalise everyone.

I imagine treating it as a "disease" is no more likely to work than treating being gay as a disease - something that is quite widely accepted amongst so-called "Christians".
