Vets in China have shown a pair of pandas pornography, in an attempt to get them to mate.

Quote:
Researchers at China's breeding and research centre were concerned that five-year-old Ke Lin and her partner Yongyong never seemed to be in the mood.
So they played the couple a video of pandas mating in the wild to in an effort to get them to mate.
"Every time Yongyong tried to mount her, Ke Lin fought him off and we were worried she was going to miss her three-day breeding cycle," said a spokesman.
"So we played them the film and she took great interest in it. After that there was no stopping her and they mated successfully.
"In the wild, Ke Lin would have seen lots of other pandas mating but in captivity, it's no wonder she needed help."

So does panda porn have a storyline or is it just gonzo?

I guess that Panda's that have always lived in captivity have not seen other pandas so have no idea what to do. Panda porn might be trigger "oh that's what I have to do" moment.

All this assumes that pandas will recognise what's on screen as other pandas. When I show my cat her revelation in a mirror, she kind of looks at it, wonders what's round the other side and loses interest.

You would expect her to get all defensive and aggressive - the reflection is of a cat. But that doesn't happen. There may be more triggers needed other than just visual.

I guess they need panda fluffers.

It seems to me that any species that didn't have a natural instinct to reproduce probably would have died out millennia ago. Pandas may not be the most prolific of species but they've managed for thousands of years before the invention of zoos or televisions.

I suspect it's all to do with isolation. And I wouldn't call it "porn" either.

If you've never met anyone else before and just stayed in your backyard, never able to venture out, I suspect you wouldn't have a clue if you met someone of the opposite gender. Some of the attraction for the opposite gender is based on your parents and I suspect this also applies to animals.

Cuckoos manage OK, as do any number of reptiles and fish that hatch from eggs and never see their parents.

More directed at mammals, since they're in the same kingdom.

It seems unlikely from an evolutionary point of view that mammals would have lost this genetic memory when they developed breasts.

Unfortunately I don't know of any examples or experiments with mammals. The nearest I can think of is "Blue Lagoon"

I believe there's a significant body of evidence that withdrawing school sex education leads to an increase in teenage pregnancy. That seems to suggest that humans at least are able to figure it out without too much help...

Maybe pandas just need the internet.

Or mates who brag about it? ;)

Sex education at my school consisted of if you should know about it by now. That said we did have a lot of teen pregnancies at my school.
