http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-21914540Afraid of UKIP much? If you took the immigrants out of the equation altogether you still need more houses. And I'd expect this to cost a fortune in court fees when all's said and done.

And keen to be seen doing something... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-21884415I'm maybe too young, is there a casual link between a dull/failing economy and immigration where politicians are concerned? I've seen it suggested about the general populace, certainly.

There's a very big historical correlation between failing economies and an increase in anti-foriegner politics. It generally doesn't end well.

Let's not go there , I was thinking a bit more recently. Say, around Black Monday, for example.

Well many right wing parties claim that we have something like the same number of unemployed as immigrants, and that if we shipped them all home we would have no unemployment. It is all completely false because many of the jobs the locals do not want like fruit puckers, cockle collectors (remember morecoombe?) or poorly paid jobs like bar staff. We probably have as many Brits abroad who would also be affected if the same attitude was taken abroad. We had the same complaints about the Ugandan Asians in the Seventies and the Caribbean's in the fifties, and the Irish before that.

OMFG. I don't really notice a Tory saying this bollocks any more, nor do I bother to feign surprise when Labour talks tough on immigration. From UKIP it goes without saying. But I wasn't expecting that [LIFTED] from Clegg.

I'm not sure bollocks is the right word. If people staying illegally beyond their visa expirey date is the big issue they say it is (I have no idea of the numbers) Then I can sort of see why they'd do this. Of course anyone desperate to stay in the UK would probably gladly sacrifice the £1000 to do it. More of a concern is NHS tourism. I'd rather they check none EU citizens at immigration and make sure they have proof of health insurance that will cover them for anything while they're here. No insurance, no entry.

i agree with the health insurance, much the same as the USA, no insurance no entry as of the rest just don’t let them enter the country in the first place and if they do so illegally then remove them immediately ...

Well, in terms of illegals he's correct. An illegal immigrant has no right of residency. Legally, they should be put on the first plane/train/boat back where they came from. There's a world of difference between an illegal immigrant and an asylum seeker.

Do we get to see them in cattle trucks headed for Dover? Expect that will gladden the hearts of many a Daily Mail reader and members of UKIP.

There aren't that many, it's the numbers that are the Daily Mail scare story, not that they exist at all. Pretty much every developed country has illegal immigrants. Most of them come from countries that are fairly close - they're just moving because they think they can do better where they're going. And most countries just catch them and ship them back over the relevant border (see Italy and Albania, for example). It's not even a big thing. There's a difference between 'having a right to live without torture and threat of death' and 'having a right to go and live wherever you like' The former is guaranteed by the UNCHR. The latter isn't. Deporting illegal immigrants is not evil or nasty. At least, no more so than punishing other people who do other crimes appropriately. Virtually every developed country does it, including some which are seen as far more civilised than the repressive and conservative UK. How we treat asylum seekers is a whole different kettle of fish, and it's not at all valid to conflate the two together.

I must have misunderstood you. Who exactly were you saying not to let in? You had excluded the medically uninsured, I am unsure who constitutes 'the rest'?
