Then you have to factor in the (enter profanities here) eBay fees.

True but 99p start means no listing fees. Inc, final value & paypal fees should still make a higher return. Especially if I put the PAYG simcard in with 12months free internet

Just looked at that link you posted CC, and somebody there is suggesting that the cheapest way would infact be to buy an iPhone in a country where they are sold unlocked (such as Italy) and bring it home to throw any old SIM card into. Would this work?
You can't do that with the ones bought in the UK, only o2 iPhone SIMs will work unless you hack it.

Well guys I now have mine. I went for the lowest cost contract in the end. Setting it up was almost a no brainer. Learning exactly what it can do looks like it may take me a while. It is not that it is hard to understand it is just that it can do soooooo much.

This phone is sooooo cool. (do people still say "cool"?) I have just tried out the voice feature. I said "Play album Back To Black" and it echoed what I said and the played the album. Amazing.

O2 customer service people are hopelessy undertrained. They havent been told about the options on upgrade for current 3G owners if they want to get the 3GS. I know this for a fact as I have spent the last 30 minutes, trying desperatly not to lose my temper with them.

Only major thing that seems to be missing is video calls - only having a camera on the back sort of messes that up. That said, I've had the ability since 2003 and have only used it twice... But I know a couple of forum members use it regularly. Serious question, does it now support Exchange Server, like the desktop version of OS X? I'm seriously tempted, it seems to have received most of the missing features that I was looking for, but I still have another year on my current contract...

Making the decision even harder!

you still can't text from within your pocket though D .. that said, the typing rate, for me at least, is at least 3 to 4 times faster than predictive input on my old n95. Is seems the faster i type, the better the accuracy which is strange. The one big let down for me on the 3.0 OS is the voice recording app .. it is so quiet as to be useless. It certainly couldn't be used to record a lecture for example. I have thought this might be my hardware that is at fault. Does everyone else find this? It also annoys me immensely that O2 are trying to charge so much for tethering. Data is data after all and I signed up for UNLIMITED data with my 3G. I can just about see the justification for a fair use policy but charging so much extra when the data is flowing to my mac book just seems money grabbing. As someone else said, would it be OK for the electricity company to charge more for the power supplying the fridge than the TV? Didge

I've never been able to use predictive text. It is the first thing I turn off on any 'phone. I used to be able to type a complete 140 character SMS in under a minute, but with predictive text, I would need about half an hour!
