This patent looks like it should be rejected. It looks like the HP Envy 2 which I have seen advertised on the TV.

Acer, Asus, Samsung, Lenovo, HP and half a dozen other companies have such devices, although the Apple device is the other way round.

With the other manufacturers, the screen has all the intelligence and you can leave your keyboard at home and use the screen as a tablet. The Apple device seems to be a rehashing of Microsoft's Mira devices from around 2000; the screen is dumb and can't be used away from the base unit - it communicates wirelessly, so you have to have the base within range to be able to do anything. The idea, with the Mira, was that you'd have a desktop in the den and you'd wander around the house with the screen and use it in front of the TV; for example.

The new Asus AIO 18" is more interesting in this respect, it is a normal AIO, until you unplug the screen, at which point it becomes a remote touch screen, talking via wireless with the base, or it can switch to Android mode.

Sod whether someone else already made one, a 'remote screen' should be unpatentable on the grounds of obviousness alone.

Having said that if MS got as far with Smart Displays as they apparently did without bothering to patent it first....

Why do all patent application drawings look like they were created in the 1920s?

Unfortunately I think it's because vagueness is so integral to the patent system

It does make me wonder. The obviously new and aluminium-shiney MacBook drawing makes it look like it should be made out of brass and polished walnut.

TBF, I'd buy that in a heartbeat :). I'd imagine it'd set on fire after about 30 seconds though...

Quite frankly this should not get a patent as it has been done before.
