TBH, it's pretty uncommon for any company to sack a member of staff over losing a piece of kit. It can happen to anyone. Persistently doing it might lead to dismissal but you'd find any number of lawyers who would happily take on a wrongful dismissal case over someone being fired for say losing a single laptop. Most companies will simply ask the employee to replace the hardware out of their wages.

Losing a laptop with a large amount of confidential data on it that might get you in trouble with the ICO, that's more likely to lead to you getting fired. But I don't think the BBC has a lot of that kind of data tbh.

It sounds a lot but they also have a lot of staff, so it might not be statistically significant.
