Despite being a fan, I have to agree with you there. She didn't die in office so it should come out of her estate.

Isnt it a ceremonial funeral and not a state funeral

Either way there's a lot of tax payers money being wasted on it.

Here is Mark Steel’s take:
Quote:
Before long came the complaints, such as Tony Blair saying: “Even if you disagree with someone very strongly, at the moment of their passing you should show some respect.” Presumably then, when Bin Laden was killed, Blair’s statement was: “Although I didn’t agree with Osama’s policies, he was a conviction terrorist, a colourful character whose short films were not only fun but educational as well. He will be sadly missed.”

I’ve seen a lot of comment about Thatcher’s recent demise, and people saying “good”, dancing in the street, etc.. I kind of feel that the death of an 87 year old woman with dementia is not really something to celebrate - she’s certainly not able to fully comprehend her condition, like anyone else in similar circumstances.

Unfortunately, those celebrating her death are missing the point: this is not a post revolutionary country, and she’s not been put up against the wall fully cognoscente of what’s going on and why. In countries where dictators are generally shot, hanged, or brutally ripped apart in a pipe, those people are generally aware that it’s happening because of some feeing of revenge or retribution. The fact that Thatcher did not experience these thoughts and the blind terror as her end came at the hand of an unruly mob is at part down the plain truth that we as a people appear to trust the ballot box more than the gun.

Yes, she did make a mess of things, but dancing in the street is unnecessary because the one person who should have got the message is no longer with us to receive it.

I'd suggest reading the section of the linked article where they discuss a woman (whose name I unfortunately can't being to mind) whose family was tortured and murdered by the PInochet regime, a regime partly funded by Thatcher's government (and if you think anyone made that decision other than her...) and who Thatcher herself by direct intervention shielded from extradition after he was ousted from power. She's damn well got a right to celebrate Thatcher's death if no-one else has.

Wow, that's a fair skill with understatement you've got there.

"Those who fail to learn from the mistakes of history are destined to repeat them'". Those celebrating Thatcher's death don't just want her to hear it, they want the people who are around now who think what she did was a good idea to hear it.

Well played The Guardian. No doubt the Daily Mail will describe it as 'disrespectful'.

BBC defends Baroness Thatcher Ding Dong song decision

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-22126940

Play it in it's entirety. If, say, some terrorist tune got into the charts I'd say the same.

And when are people gonna learn that Twitter etc is not like talking to your friends in person

Play it in it's entirety.

51 seconds. 79p on iTunes.

You can record the sample and get the whole thing for free (iTunes samples are 60 seconds long - and, yes, I checked).

They should pay it in its entirety, with no comment before or after.

Exactly it is not worth the [LIFTED] storm that will come from this shoddy decision. Last week it was a campaign for PJ and Duncan's song and that was not banned or trimmed down.

quote from the Daily Telegraph, reporting on the Danish cartoon controversy in 2006...

So it's OK to offend muslims but not conservatives. Just so you all know.

As Mark Steel said - when Osama Bin Laden was killed, everyone rejoiced. No one separated the person from the politics, but when Thatcher dies, it's the done thing to do.

It's one rule for brown turbaned ruffians, and another from posh politicians.

I think him being a mass murderer may have had something to do with it.
