From the BBC:

Quote:
Two explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon race have left an unknown number of people injured. Video and photographs from Boston show a scene of confusion, with emergency services descending on the scene and bloodied spectators being taken to a medical tent.

"There are a lot of people down," said one runner quoted by AP news agency.

Updates from the BBC here. Some fairly grim photos emerging and the NYPD have stepped up security at New York landmarks as a precautionary measure.

More like 7/7 than 9/11.
Bad news though. Hope the death toll isn't large.

So far it sounds not - initial reports are 2 dead and 22 seriously injured. If it stays that low I'll be, well, not happy, maybe relieved.

Two guys over here convicted of planning to blow up the centre of Luton and now this... do some people think there's just not enough misery in the world already? Jesus wept.

BBC 24 have footage of one of the explosions going off in the crowd (as you would expect with the media gathered at the finish line), and another live shot showing a second explosion a little way back along the route. It is quite surprising that the death toll is only two so far. I've read that the New York Post is reporting a higher death toll.

Good. Hopefully the FBI might recognise the bombers 'signiature' when they analyise the bomb.

I saw on twitter that apparently police a guarding a suspect in hospital. The link was to New York Times but I couldn't get to the site.

I'm awaiting the NRA's response that if the runners were carrying rifles this would have been avoided.

Earlier there was a story on the NYT saying that a suspect - apparently Saudi - was under armed guard in hospital and it was not known if he was injured by the explosions or during his apprehension. That story has now disappeared as far as I can see. According to the BBC /Sky News the bombs utilised ball bearings to cause maximum damage. Nice.

No they should have been carrying bombs, as the only way to stop bad people with bombs is good people with bombs.

My sympathies are with all the victims.

An 8 year old boy was also killed, and lots of other casualties. It is looking like a domestic terrorism to me. It is the anniversaries of Waco and Oklahoma this week so that is probably the real reason for this week being chosen.

You'd need a blocker at either end while builders put a bridge over the area. You'd probably need a parachute, two builders and 3 blockers. The blockers would all be sacrificed :(

I can't find a gif, but I'll never forget the way those poor guys put their hands over their heads before they go boom :(

Saw a comment from some gun-mad Yank who seems to be a friend of a friend who basically posted something along the lies of “How long before liberals try to ban bombs?”. There are some truly crazy-mad people there.
