Inspired by recent comments, changing lifestyles yada yada yada, and I know some of you already have.

Personally I'll always want a big screen - I'm too much of a geek for one thing, and quite a bit of money has been spent by other people making films and games that are meant to be seen relatively large :D

A rather large TV will be one of my first purchases when I move out, for watching dumb/fun films with my mates if nothing else

While I will admit that I could drop the TV because it is easy to. I use my iPad for 90% of my TV viewing now, but I will still have a big TV for films or even just relaxing in front of the box. With the potential new technologies of 4k or 8k screens I cannot see myself living without one. It does mean that I might not rush out to buy a new TV for some time. Last year I was looking at a 3D TV and was very impressed, probably because it was the active 3D version. So I was actually able to view the images in 3D rather than struggle with the red-green glasses. Though will want to wait and see what technology settles before buying.

It is a social experience and it is important. Where would we be, when we didn't fight over the remote control and who gets to decide what we watch?

Seriously though, sitting, watching a program together is nice, you interact more than if every family member sat their with an iPad and headphones, or disappeared into their own room to watch a show. That said, I don't watch much TV, as in, apart from Tatort on a Sunday evening, I don't look forward to any particular show and if I miss a show, it doesn't bother me. But it is still nice to sit there with the rest of the family and talk about the shows we are watching together.

Although that usually happens with crime shows, where we'll watch the first 5 minutes and go "the brother-in-law did it." "Yep, you're right, what shall we watch now?"

So your brother-in-law is still committing all these crimes? How come they have not caught him? ;)

No plans to ditch the TV here.
Aside from my computer it's the only sound source downstairs and it doesn't use bandwidth up when it's on. I frequently have it on a music channel of a weekend to provide some background noise, that or the radio channels.

Wouldn't bother me one jot if the TV went. I think the only thing I actively watch these days is Top Gear and frankly I'd prefer to watch that on the computer as then the sound goes through the hifi.

The only reason I have a tv is to play on the Xbox (and SNES), and listen to the radio. It very rarely gets used for watching watching tv on...Previous to getting it I had been without a tv for about four years.

My TV and all its associated paraphernalia went about 3 years ago. I haven't really missed it.

Most of what I want to watch is either on the iPlayer or it never makes it onto UK TV (or if it does it takes ages) so I don't feel too bad about downloading it.

For me a 15" laptop screen from a couple of feet away has just as much impact as a huge TV on the other side of the room.

Since taking on my new job, my viewing habits have changed drastically. I now watch only a brief snippet of BBC News (10 mins instead of 30 mins). In the evening, the TV is on in the background (typically Dave) and I cannot remember when I last actually watched a TV programme. It is otherwise used for the PS3.

I wouldn't miss the TV but I would miss gaming on the PS3.

While there are obviously things I use my iPad for that I don't use my TV for, if ever I'm going to sit and watch anything of length with the iPad I'll just stream it to my Apple TV and watch it that way.
I know I don't have a girlfriend at the moment, but I don't want that to always be the case, and snuggling up infront of an iPad or laptop to watch a film just wouldn't do it for me.

There are still things I like to watch, but if I'm honest we could chuck out the TV and not look back.

Since Best Beloved's eyesight went spoggly, our viewing habits have dropped off a cliff, aided by some indifferent programming on the TV. Picking anything worth watching these days is a chore, and when the PVR decides to randomly forget to record shows that I thought I'd been stacking up, I lose the will to actually want to begin watching.

I think I'd be happy with just an internet connection and access to the on demand services.

Yes I think that we will always keep the TV. I might do most of my viewing on the iPad now, but when anyone visits I use the big box like everyone else. It is just far more social. The iPad on my desk is just the right size and position to watch the TV and use the computer at the same time. Longer term I think that we might transition away from a TV in every room to only one in the living room and the ability to stream to iPads in the bedrooms.

I've only ever had the one TV.
I've never had a TV in the bedroom, or the kitchen, only ever had one in the living room.
I just don't get multiple TVs around the house.

Not likely to happen in a family home, but I could see myself ditching the telly if I lived alone. 30" monitor ;)
