The windows 8 start screen is much more flexible and frankly more useful than Launch Control in OSX. Launch Control is frankly one of the most ill-thought out things Apple have ever put in a computer. I don't know anyone who regularly uses it.

my new PC has W8 and so far while not loving it it is slowly growing on me
SWMBO has only complained about Skype in that it's an app in W8 and so is different to the normal W7 one she was used to - overall she likes it

Thanks for that. I cannot see the problem then. If there are ways of launching other apps like launch apps it is all pretty irrelevant. It is a matter of finding a way that you like.

You can still download the desktop version of Skype and install it on Windows 8. I'll agree it works very poorly as an app.

You can still install the desktop version. I have both installed.

I just installed the desktop version on my mother's W8 laptop. Asides from being better, it was also the only way I could see to actually change the account login from her MS passport to her old Skype details. I'm sure there must be a way, but every click just led me around in great circles...
Incidentally, Mum has used Windows 2.01, 95, XP, 7 and 8 with no real learning curve problems. She's a pensioner who hates computers, so if she can manage just fine then...

Its those pesky "power users" who seem to have the most problems. The same group that bitches and squeals when anything is changed and defends the old way of doing it until a different way comes along then will defend to the death the way they were just decrying. Im sur sone of them are still wondering where all the horses have gone and when people will realised these automobile car thingies are not an improvement.

I agree, it is frustrating, especially for an amnesiac to learn a new way of doing things, but eventually you either learn a workaround or discover something else that suits you. I have found a number of great ways to launch the app that I want, without much effort. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk.

A lot of the apps bug me. Especially the MS ones that demand a hotmail account be entered for no reason.

It's not a Hotmail account they need. It's whatever email address you registered with Microsoft. My mum uses her gmail account. It's supposed to make things simpler to have just one sign-in but it seems badly implemented in places.

So why is it demanding a hotmail/outlook address on my wife's laptop before she can setup the email app to work with her ISP email account?

Though didn't they think these things through? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk.

I don't know. It didn't on my mum's or on mine or on any other build I've seen. Do you have a screen shot, or the exact wording? It does tie things to your MS account, but as I said already, you can use any email address for that. It's just whatever address you feel like signing up with on https://signup.live.com/ I think perhaps some people just jump to conclusions and incorrectly assume that you need to use an MS email account to sign up for an MS account. You don't, any more than you need an x404 email account to sign up for an x404 account. However, if you do have a Hotmail account then you probably already have an MS account that goes with that. No one is forcing you to use it if you don't want to. Although I did choose to use my Hotmail account, my mum used her gmail account. She doesn't have a Hotmail or Outlook account. The Mail app definitely works just fine without one.

On OSX there is an option to set up accounts during install, but it can be skipped. So I guess Microsoft copied this. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
