I deal with all the major supermarkets and I would say Morrison's and Sainsbury's are easily the most ethical to deal with - I think you can guess who I would place last.

I was in Tesco today looking at coffee prices - 100g jar at £3 or buy the 200g jar for £6.39 Do they think we are all idiots?

Yes the different prices for the same goods really annoys me. I once looked at the prices for Maltesers in Asda. 6 different packs and ways to buy yet no consistent way to compare the prices, or work out which offered the best value for money. The Co-op are pretty ethical. I get my instant coffee from there as they do a fair trade gold blend equivalent. They also do a lot of fair trade items.

THe kenco "eco-refill" pouches often work out more expensive than buying a jar. I have pointed this out to one supermarket but gave up. Life's too short

It seems like they are taking advantage of those wanting to be green. It makes all their other green claims to be greenwashing.

Coffee roasters are popping in most major cities, places like costa/starbucks (:S) and others sell ground and bean coffee to take away, often for £4-5 for 30/40 cups of coffee. I think a coffee machine is a worthwhile investment

Yes I agree. When I bought my Kenwood Chef the first add on that I bought was the milling set so I could grind my own coffee beans. So now I can prepare great coffee in my coffee machine. To get that great cappuchino I prepare the milk with this.

The capsules cost £45 for 126 so that works out about 36p per cup so way cheaper than Costa etc.

A teaspoon (standard measure to make one cup) of ground coffee is roughly 5g and you get decent coffee in 225g bags for about 4 quid, meaning a standard cup of coffee made in a filter machine probably costs between 10 and 11 pence, once you've factored in water, electricity and disposable filter paper. Say 15p if you add a lot of milk.

Those 'pod' machines - of whichever brand - are easily the most expensive way to make coffee at home. It's not as if making coffee is particularly complicated or time consuming. Only a sensible option if you only ever make one cup at a time.

Last 100g jar cost me £3 for 100g - although we are talking Arabica beans not the cheap horrible Robusta ones

There's (or there was, shut down a while ago when the owner retired) a very good coffee dealers in the Royal Arcade in Wigan. I used to get a bag of Jamaican Blue Mountain from her for about that, ground to order. Somewhere like Home Ground Coffee will sell you a bag for about a fiver. It's really not that unusual. OK, hypothetically, say your ground coffee costs you eight quid, then your cup of coffee costs 24p. That's still a third less than a pod. To get a cup of coffee that costs the same price as the pods, you'd need to buy coffee at roughly £14 for 200g. For that price you'd get considerably better than 'decent' coffee.

The pods are expensive compared to every other method of consuming coffee apart from buying it in a coffee shop. This is just a fact. And it's not even particularly surprising - we pay extra for convenience in all sorts of places. However the fact is the pods aren't actually all that more convenient, unless you only ever want to make individual cups of coffee.
