Fines for using mobile phone while driving to increase to £90

Quote:
Sending a text message or making a phone call while at the wheel will land drivers with harsher penalties, the transport minister has warned.

In a move to crack down on dangerous driving, Patrick McLoughlin indicated that fines for a variety of offences would rise by 50%, from £60 to £90. The number of penalty points offenders receive on their licence will remain at three.

It looks like they are only doing this to raise money. If they are serious increase the number of points as well.

Is that all?
It's been shown that using a mobile while driving is just as dangerous as drink driving.
I'd expect it'll take more than a small fine to put people off.
If it was me in power I'd have a six point penalty and a three figue fine.

A fine passed on income would definitely stop this. It needs to be higher.

I got rear-ended yesterday and the car is probably a write-off.

Increase the punishment to £9000 and a 3-year ban

In France it's 3 points and 135€ fine but it can be as high as 750€ in case of aggravating circumstances.

Pull them over take their phone off them and smash it in front of them - with a nod to the insurance company, so they can't claim accidental damage.

Should be a straight 6-months driving ban.

Be amazed how suddenly people would stop using their phones if that was done.

Even add in a short custodial sentence and that would end it. I can never understand the need to use a phone while driving, unless it is giving you route directions and it is fixed to the dashboard or window. I am off to Telford later in the year, but I will be giving route directions to the driver near the end but will not need them until we are exiting the M6. Though that is the only reason for using the phone.
