My mum had cancer at 50. Not entirely sure if that counts as "early", but my doctor was really good and sent me to the macmillan centre for a chat as soon as I requested. Not had the genetic test though.

My fiancé thinks it was a good move and she would do the same in her position. I must say, I don't know, on the one side, she is risking her health for something that may never happen, on the other hand it is better to do it now than wait until it is too late.
I think it is the thought of a mutilated body that makes it hard for some people to accept.

With the odds quoted in that article, I don't blame her for doing this at all.

Tough decision to make though, especially for an actress. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk.

She'd certainly be able to afford the best possible reconstructive surgery, and indeed finance whatever form of the procedure was least disruptive in the first place. Plus, if we're considering the notion that mastectomies are a major blow to a woman's self image, being voted the most beautiful woman on earth multiple times over probably gives her a reservoir of self-confidence few if any other women could call upon.
I'm not meaning to trivialise the choice she'd found herself having to make or saying that the procedure she's been through isn't traumatic but she's in the absolutely best possible starting place any woman could be in to recover from it.

Those at high risk in Germany can get a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery through the health insurance.

She does have all the advantages to get through this. I wish her well and a speedy recovery.

She did. She had reconstructive surgery shortly after the first op.

Just found out the cost of genetic testing privately (including pre and post counselling) is £1200.

That is a lot, but would private insurance cover that?

No idea. Bear in mind insurance policies will jack the price of your premiums up if there's a whiff of cancer about.
