"Microsoft made use of both the login information and the specially created URL"

So someone or something at Microsoft is reading and acting upon the information contained in private Skype messages. You should assume this every time you use the service.

Just because the EULA says they can, doesn't mean you expect them to actually do it...

Again, not sure if this is News or Internet or Gadget or Meeting Place material, but I'll leave it here this time.

Same here normally, though I have not used it for ages.

For online messages I use either email or whatsapp. Pity they don't do a windows desktop version.

I must admit to using Apple messages more than anything else right now.

Hmm, they have only published about a fifth of the original German article...

Microsoft says that the NetFilter servers scan the URL for malware. Nobody reads them and, allegedly, they don't download any data, they just look to see if it is a fishing site.

"Fishing sites don't usually use https," is different to a lot of reports over the last several months from heise themselves, where they have been using spoofed certifcates from legitimate certificate issuing agencies that had been hacked...

So are they only scanning messages that contain URL's?

They scan all Messages for URLs and if they find one, they check the URL and if it contains malware, it is added to the list. If the link has already been scanned, then the link will be removed from the message, or the user will be warned, I would think, I haven't received a link over Skype for a few years...

In which case the scanning of URL's is merely a precaution for its customers. While it is not pleasant to hear of it, I am going to criticise Microsoft particularly for this. It stops the spread of malware.
