Get blackout blinds - we fitted them to our South facing bedroom window and they keep it nice and dark - also as they are just blinds easy to fit and you can keep the existing curtains

I fitted blackout curtain liners, which is the cheap option. I got Tesco to deliver them with my groceries. They hang behind your existing curtains, which is why most curtain hooks have two loops.

Isn't that a bit rude and violent to be watching on public transport?

Quite so. It's not as if they're stood up shouting a description of each scene to the whole train. We've had this conversation before but I'll say it again : Your desire to deny yourself information does not trump my desire to have it.

Personally I would be cautious of what I watch on a train as there are a lot of school children then go on my line. That's just my opinion.

I'm a childless adult. Pretty much none of the stuff I own is child friendly because it doesn't have to be. Am I supposed not to use my tablet on a train on the off chance some pubescent might wander past and be emotionally traumatised? Should we have 'child free' carriages in the same way we have 'noise free' ones? Errr.. no. I watch stuff on my tablet. Some of it is 'family viewing', some of it isn't. As has been said, if you choose to rubberneck and then see something you don't like, that's your problem, not mine. As long as I'm not actively disturbing anyone else I don't feel any sort of guilt at all. Besides which, me playing 'Red Wedding' on my tablet with my phones in is infinitely less likely to disturb anyone than some delicate pre-teen playing sodding Justin Beiber at top volume though their phone so their mates can hear it.

What a delightful person. Do you also not give up your seat for pregnant women and the elderly?

Yes, because playing my media on my tablet sat in my seat with headphones on is exactly the same as leaving a pregnant woman standing on a crowded train or bus. If I want to do one I obviously would be happy to do the other. I bet I kick puppies too. if you want to raise a counter argument to what I've said, I'd be happy to hear it. But that's not really one, is it?

I have to agree with jonbwfc - I use headphones as I don't want to disturb anyone. As for the elderly / pregnant - I will generally give my seat up for the elderly although I would wonder why they are travelling at rush hour. As for pregnant generally not unless I saw they were really suffering - after all if they are OK to work then they should be OK to stand as the commute to work is part of the "job"

OK jonbwfc and hifidelity2 I once spotted a guy watching porn on his phone on the train. I guess you're OK with that too? I don't have children but I am conscious of what I am viewing in a public area, even at work. I watch a lot of things at lunch time and if I know something is very x rated I won't watch it at work. Regarding pregnant ladies why don't you get a large sack of potatoes carry it around all day and see how you cope standing on a train. Jeez
