UK consumers to 'loosen belts' http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-22838241

Thoughts please :)

Short of a dire change in circumstances, I'll carry on as normal

Increases in personal tax allowances will sees basic rate taxpayers taking home nearly £300 extra this year.

Probably not enough to offset the rise in food and energy inflation.

Personally I will be cutting back.

Got an increment I was not expecting, worth £350 a year, but as I am in the higher rate band so no tax drop.
No change really

Yeah, I hope you find something soon.

The kids are grown up, so we actually have much less each month now, as the children's allowance, the maintenance from their father and the area bonus all stop.

Same as it's always been.

I want to splash out on a dslr but £300 isn't enough to cover the purchase.

At the moment, a bit tighter than normal. But only beacuse I haven't been offshore much recently.
In general we've rebuilt most of the savings we spent when I lost my job a few years ago. That doesn't mean we're going to start spending a lot again though. Our car only has a couple of years left in it (it's almost up to 140k miles now) so we need to save for a newer one. I don't do creit/loans for things like that.

Which is fine, except:
A) I have no mechanical skills at all, so I have to pay people when it starts to go wrong.
B) We're a one car family, so we need reliability.
C) It'll take us several years to save for a newer one.
If it starts to break down a lot we'll get rid of it, if it doesn't we'll just keep it. It's alreay doing much better than our last car. That started to break down a lot after 110k miles.

Yep, I sold my old Golf at 350,000 miles and I know that it did at least another 200,000 after that.

I'm at 163k down here and I'll be keeping her until she dies, or I no longer need a car. Buying a new car is almost always a false economy versus repairing/servicing an existing one IMO.

My belt is very tight, but I don't really count as I'm not a UK consumer at the moment.
