£430 for the console probably won't last long, though I'd assume the Kinnect is what did that and wonder what Sony's providing. They've got some amount of (probably timed) exclusives which could go either way for both MS and the publishers, but very good for a launch history-wise.

I can only guess that because of the rapidly falling numbers of users that they daren't take a chance by selling it at a loss to start with, if there is a chance they may never sell enough to make a profit. Following Nintendo policy, which seems sensible.

I imagine even that price will represent a loss until they sell many millions. You could not buy a similarly performing PC for that, let alone the cost of the accessories.

I have not seen any specs for the new consoles.

PS4 £349. Still expensive, but slightly less mentally expensive.

Oh, it will also play used games.

They're not that dis-similar, the main differentiator is RAM. They both have 8GB of main RAM, but the PS4 uses 8GB of really fast RAM, whereas the XBox One has 8GB of slower RAM with a smaller very fast cache.

General opinion seems to be the PS4 ends up with better performance but the fact is both should be able to do pretty much any game you're like at 1080p/60 fps, which is as much as pretty much any TV you're like yo have will support anyway.

That I think will be crucial for me. With console games I get a few new but mainly second hand but months after launch so they could have been through many machines before the end up with me.

PS4 - better hardware, cheaper, no compulsary kinect (ie optional eye), no restriction on used games, no compulsary sign on. The only downsides are: ugly design and you have to have PS+ to play online.

What the hell is going on with the designers? Is it a competition of who can design the ugliest box?

Yes the box is ugly and lacks any styling. Having to have PS+ is not a problem for me as I do not play online games. The price is a plus.

To be fair, PS+ is actually not bad value. But the fact online gaming is no longer free is a bit of a downer.

I had no idea what it was so looked it up and £40 a year is actually good value if you play online games alot. If you are a teenager who spends several hours a day playing during term time and 15 hours a day during holidays then it is excellent value. If you only play an hour a month not so great value but comparable with many forms of entertainment. Also it is not cheap for Sony to maintain the servers of PS+ so seems fair that they charge for it.

I don't play MP online much and it's all CoD if I do. We just don't have the clan that we used to back in MW2/BLOPS1. Hence I play around 8 hours a week which means that £40/yr is 10p per hr of gameplay.

Try finding any other form of entertainment for 10p per hour! It can make sense if your circumstances fit. I do not play Mp so it does not make sense for me. The rest of the PS4 deal does actually appeal to me.

I'd want more detail on what you get for your subscription, but I don't agree with paying for multiplayer short of World of Warcraft etc. It's Sony's one potential fcuk-up after 'winning' E3.

On the design front I find it preferable to the One, but that's like saying 'this turd doesn't smell as bad as this one'.
