......AT LAUNCH

Quote:
After the announcement that the Xbox One will only work in some countries around the world at launch, Microsoft has also added that the Xbox One will only work in 21 states in the US at launch.

Due to the way Microsoft has handled the Xbox One console policies, games can not be activated if you live in an unsupported region. This also appears to be true within the US where only certain states will be able to enjoy the Xbox One at launch. We spoke with a Microsoft representative about this decision.

You know Sony's FailBoats? Seems that Microsoft are building their own fleet.

Are we sure this isn't a hoax? Deciding which state to sell in using obesity statistics?

Obviously a [LIFTED] attempt at satire.

Another on their site " E3 ROUNDTABLE: GOOD GRAPHICS AND CUTSCENES CAN EASILY REPLACE GAMEPLAY "

I do like how the PlayStation fanboys like to peddle this as true though. It's sad really.

The fact some people believe it is rather an indication of how utterly.. screwed up Microsoft's PR has been for the last couple of months. It's got to the point where they've said so many idiotically stupid things that even this some people look at and think "hold on a minute, it might be true..."

They have been launching a fail fleet as of late. Though considering the variable state of US broadband it could have some semblance of fact. Though if this were true why launch such a vastly different system with all the problems that it entails?

Considering the problems EA suffered with the launch of Sim City which requires an “always on” connection to the internet to work (basically, people could not play because the servers were overwhelmed), stories like this have more than a small ring of truth to them. You have to consider if MS would be somehow limiting access to their servers to start with, and rolling out more capacity over through 2014.

They can't though. The thing needs to connect every 24 hours or it's a (temporary) brick. And the last thing they want is people in the launch period claiming their box is refusing to play their games, that'll kill it forever. They have to allow every single person who has an Xbox One to connect to their service. No access throttling allowed. The only way they can constrain the load on the servers is to constrain supply of the product in the shops (or constrain demand, which they seem to be making a pretty good job of doing in fact)

In reality its unlikely MS will ever have a general blackout. They've got a utterly enormous server population spread over several continents with redundant networking capability between them. if it ever does reach the point where their entire infrastructure fails, we've got bigger problems than not being able to play Xbox.

The main issue is that at some point in the future they may decide the Xbox One is a dead product and remove the ability to connect to the service. At that point the console will become unusable even if it remains mechanically sound, a fate which has never befallen any console in any previous generation. You can still play with a SNES you bought on launch day today if it's still going - indeed a couple of weeks ago I was playing with an Atari Jaguar I had in my attic, which I bought over 20 years ago. There's no guarantee you'll be able to do that with an XBox One beyond Microsoft's word on it, which as history shows they can and do go back on if they need to.

It could become another mis-selling scandal with everyone entitled to their money back.

I know the people who run Steam have publicly stated that should they ever wish to switch their authentication service down, they'll issue a patch that will allow games to be played without it. That option is obviously also open to MS - they could issue a firmware update to the Xbox One that removed the 'connect every 24 hours' requirement. How easy it would be to do that only Microsoft know.

I doubt there is ANY truth to MS delaying launch in 21 US states on the basis of how fat someone is. Stupid story is still stupid.

Probably very very easy, but they wont do that until the unit is obsolete and xbox whatever is the only machine they sell.

As long as it was clear that would be the case then it would present no real problems to the public. It all depends on how the used games market will be treated after that date. If you needed some connection to play a used game after the disconnection date then that could open up new problems for them, depending on how the DRM is prepared. If the box can receives a patch that eliminates the need to connect then that will end the problem. Though they may need to keep that server open for a long time in case someone does not download the patch.
