http://www.psu.com//a019911/Warning--PS ... ng-systemsSeems that Sony still have a stock of failboats ready to launch. I hope my PS3 is OK - it’s set to automatically update.

No matter how hard MS try, Sony can still show them the way on how to abuse the failboat fleet

Yes, because Microsoft would never do anything that dumb. The worrying thing about the next gen is that both the Xbox One and PS4 have unmonitored 'background' updating of the firmware as an advertised feature. As it is, PS3 owners can avoid this issue once they know about it. I think even with PS+ it doesn't perform an unattended firmware update, you still have to 'OK' it, PS+ just downloads the update automatically. Next gen, if something like this happens, you're going to have no say in it.

I never said MS would never do the same, but in the week MS were trying their best to hand the nex gen on a golden platter PR wise, they then show how to grasp defeat from the jaws of victory by doing a PR cock up Heres hoping they do a bit more testing before they unleash it to the public. With PS+ you can update automatically. I can't remember if you can opt to just download the update for later installation, or if the auto download is also auto update. Anyway, mine is running 4.45 and seems to be suffering no ill effects.

It's just auto download, as I've just found out to my relief. I suspect even Sony aren't hatstand enough to patch the firmware on someone's console without them at least clicking 'OK' first. Apparently it's generally machines in which people have swapped the hard drive to a size bigger than available at retail that have a problem with it. Either way, I'm giving it a miss. Jon

Well I was unable to sign in at 7pm and couldn't do so until around 830pm.

That was something else, an error server side I think. I had the same problem and I had it on my PS Vita as well, which obviously hadn't had the same firmware update. Seems to be OK now though.

I think that they might have tested this one, though what will happen to those with bricked machines? Is there a way to do this update? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk.

Yes. You download the firmware file onto a USB stick, then boot the PS3 into a 'safe mode menu' (involves holding down the power button at startup until you hear the right number of beeps). One of the options on that menu is 'install firmware from USB'. Jon

Joe Average will loathe doing that... I remember going into safe mode ages ago, memory might be wrong but I seem to recall it taking quite a few attempts to get my timing right!
