I should point out that I'm talking about Live and PSN.

That is more about the failings of Live and PSN. If they improved the customer experience of downloads then it could be workable. As it stands the whole concept is flawed for many people to even risk.

Indeed.

I've spent vastly more on downloads than disks for PC. I only got Skyrim in a box because it was cheaper and I really wanted the map. Apart from that, my last CD was probably a decade ago!

I think that it depends on the game, I have morrowind which needs a map which is in the boxed version. Consoles are suited to disks because of limited space and loads of game saves. If you had downloads then you would need better download features and online game saves. Which computers I think game downloads have the advantage with plenty of disk space and tolerable DRM. That and prices have helped Steam.

Microsoft went about there concept like arrogant sods, so no wonder the backlash. If they had really had proper feedback they would not have gone with such a stupid idea which they have to reverse so quickly.

I actually thought it was very thoughtfully conceived and very generous. It permitted everything that steam did, with the additional possibility of reselling box editions via a store.

Players will lose out because of the knee-jerk back-lash.

Possibly another reason for you not to sell yours?

I've a PS3, and I don't like giving money to MS as a general rule

It was the lack of clarity over additional fees that was the problem. Knowing how big corporations operate they could have charged the same for reactivating a used game that they would have sold a new game for. While it had merits they should have not operated it as a take it or leave option. People will leave under those circumstances. It will be interesting to see how well or badly the console will now sell with all the bad publicity.

I did not realise that you did not have a Xbox.

As a rule I am not anti MS but will only buy their products if they are good, like logitech mice or Age of Empires etc.

Interesting comments. I played Morrowind because it was a game that came with the computer (I think it was the graphics card discs) and never ever used the map. With Skyrim, the boxed map was crap and I ended up printing out a nine page map, cutting off the borders and sellotaping it together.

Most people can cope without the need for maps. Though with my amnesia I cannot remember enough fast enough to get out of one of the rooms in Halo, even with a map it is impossible for me to do it in time as the swarm chase me. With games like Halo I need maps to show me where objects are and what to do. I do not remember from one game to another what needs to be done.

I just wanted it to have, not knowing or caring if it would be useful. I actually only ever used it in an almost but not entirely unrelated RPG

I actually got bored with the game a very long way from finishing it. I might give it another go, but probably not. I shan't be selling it though, just in case...

If you get bored, enable God mode. It suddenly becomes a lot more fun to hack'n'slash or do other stuff knowing you're immune to enemy attack. Certainly I got a bit bored until I did it.
