Pubs seems to be closing by the dozen - a combination of the smoking ban and the recession, no doubt - but the real ale angle gives me hope for the future. Nothing says repeat customer like a real ale fan. :)

I think that's the crux of surviving the recession, finding your niche. High street pubs that serve 8 different kinds of fizzy lager and jagerbombs are ten a penny, but somewhere that does a good range of micro/craft beers?
And it's becoming popular too. I love trying new beers.

I understand the uneven contracts they have with their suppliers are a large part of the problem. Not relying too much on Fosters for the revenue sounds like a smart move.
