What's wrong with that, ducky? If only more companies were punished like that!

when your five co-defendants all make deals with the prosecution, you know you're in trouble from the start.
When your deal with the five major publishers causes prices to rise for the consumer, you know your in trouble.
when there are 33 state attorneys all in line to start legal action against you you know your in trouble.

will this be the case that stays around Apples neck for a long time, like the MS browser verdict?

Apple's response sounds like a spoilt child.

The punishment is supposed to be harder than what was gained by the crime, otherwise it wouldn't be a punishment.

They might simply shut the bookstore. And leave Amazon with the monopoly. It is not like Apple need the revenue from the bookstore and the others need access to the IPad more than Apple needs the books. The vast majority of transactions take place on iOS and not on Android.

Wrong. Just look at the banks. The fines are so low that they are just another overhead. The only thing that has hurt them is the repayment of the fees. The fines were a fraction of the revenue. With Apple it looks the other way around.

If Apple closes down their book store, then surely that means that Amazon has a monopoly and something will have to be done about that too.

apart from the fact Amazon does not have a monopoly, a dominant share but not a monopoly and a monopoly is not illegal just abusing a monopoly.

for a content consuming device, you dont start limiting the contnent that helps drive people to choose your device.

They have a domination that counts as a monopoly from a legal perspective.

I am sure Apple could allow iBooks to read any non DRM ebook.
