BBC News clickeyI don't get that much e-mail at work (relatively speaking) but it takes a good hour or so when I get back to sort out the inbox after a week on holiday. I'm not sure how the hierarchy would respond to someone put up their out of office saying they were deleting everything while they were on holidays. So, what do you do when you're on holiday? Stick on an 'Out of Office' and sort it out when you get back, take your work mobile/laptop with you and not have a proper holiday or redirect everything to the bin?

As I've been off for a couple of weeks, I should probably check mine. And set an out of office note. Ah well, I'm sure they'll have survived.

Work main - there's always someone on the rig to answer the emails there Work own - it's very rare I ever get anything other than corporate spam to my own work email account.

If I set my emails to delete when I went on leave, I wouldn't have a job to come back to...

Which is fine, but surely you're not expected to read them?

After I come back off holiday, I generally work on the basis that unless I'm chased up about responding to an email it gets ignored.

It is not a problem for me, but then my mail is all forwarded to the Apple servers so I can always read it on my phone or iPad no matter where I am.

Yes. Especially if they are from my managers, other employees, partners or customers! Spam I can ignore, but that accounts for about half a dozen emails a year.

While on leave? I think The Prof meant 'read them when you get back'. Frankly, if my job required me to effectively work while I'm supposed to be on holiday, I'd find another job.

TBH I'd be lucky if I get five emails a week at work. As a small workplace, we tend to just meet up and chat about issues. The practice manager on the other than easily gets a few hundred per week and needs to go through them all.

I read my emails whilst on holiday. It's not required in my contract but I'd rather keep up to date with what's going on to save chaos when I get back to the office.
