Lending to landlords topped £5bn in the past three months, a period that preceded the Bank of England's pledge this week to keep interest rates low for the next three years. More than one in 10 mortgages are now being handed to a would-be landlord while first-time buyers are still struggling to get on the housing ladder. http://www.theguardian.com/money/2013/a ... -mortgages

It would cost me more to rent a property similar to mine than is does to buy it (including buildings and life insurance).
The housing market is the UK is permanently FUBAR, because any measures taken to get it under control would cripple the buy-to-let landlords (who now number in the hundreds of thousands, apparently). I seriously doubt my children will ever be able to buy a house.

I'm a buy to let landlord. In the fortunate position that some endowments actually paid out and was able to buy somewhere for my son to live at Uni. Another student shares, which covers the costs and brings in more than I would get in interest.
Plus it's the north east where prices are lower.
