Seems a good idea so long as there's checks and balances, though I'm under no illusions about G4S's involvement.

A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Justice said: "We do not want prisoners sitting idle in their cells when they should be working towards their rehabilitation.

Crap this is more about providing cheap labour for companies. They will need it if they can get millions more behind bars. In the US there are millions of prisoners who do work for companies. They are even cheaper than Chinese workers, though how long before they have to compete with Chinese prisoners?

If they really want to help people get back into work they really should not be imprisoning people with jobs unless they are very serious crimes. If the person loses their free time and has to spend nights and weekends in gaol then they can still keep their job and serve a sentence. While people are inside get them to do literacy course and find out what they are good at and work with job centres to get them qualified in those jobs. If they can spend their time in gaol learning to be plumber hairdressers or whatever then it reduces their risk of reoffending. All this is, is cheap labour for the companies. It will not really help them unless they are guaranteed a job on release.
