It's a waste of time and money in the grand scheme of things. And it's all liable to change with catch-up TV anyway; I doubt we'll be getting away with that for long... It's idiotic anyway. I mean my TV auto-tuned itself the first time I switched it on

I agree, since it is basically a tax why all these additional over heads when they could make it free and cut peoples tax allowances by £300 to cover the cost of the licence.

If your tax rate is 45% then you would pay 45% of £300 so you would pay £135 extra tax, if you have more homes then you would be covered. If you only just pay basic rate tax then you would pay 20% of £300 which is £60. It would save the paperwork on free TV licenses for pensioners. If the pensioner earns a fortune then they still pay through a slightly lower allowance. No more people in prison for TV license. Then think of the savings in the court system which would be a bonus. If the household has multiple earners then they would pay via each person but then they would pay more. If you are on a low income like a student then your low income would mean that you are already covered. It is fair based on the ability to pay and would be collected by the tax man through PAYG so would be cheap to collect. Certainly a lot cheaper than it is currently.

whiffs of the poll tax. all tax payers end up paying more. I can see that being popular.

Not really it would mean the end of the TV license and the presumption is that you use some TV or radio either live or delayed. If you are in a household with multiple earners you could still be better off and you also do not have to run the risk of forgetting to update or renew. If you were two basic rate tax payers then you would pay less. The current TV license is more of a poll tax. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

I don't think you understand what the poll tax was. His proposal is a progressive tax which makes it exactly nothing like the poll tax at all.

TVs could be metered. The more you watch the more you pay.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

I do understand what the poll tax was. I was pointing out the obvious comparison. If your going to replace the current system with one that will make those properties with multiple earners pay more its just not going to be touched with a ten foot barge pole by any of the current political parties. That would not be popular it would open up the opportunity of loads of fees and immense bills.

It would be fair though. It would also make a nice incentive for people to get off their lazy arses and do something more useful / helpful.

Though the internet did not take off until broad band people were too aware of the costs of metered access.
