The problem is that the savings limit for benefits if £6000 is still way above most peoples savings. Unless they are saving for a mortgage they will probably be in debt, and if they have a mortgage they cannot save that much. Also the because of the way benefits are calculated there is a huge problem with working out whether you will be better taking a job, if both are unemployed. They need to make sure that if someone cannot work then they do not become dependent on their partners income for things like housing benefit.
