Quote:
The UK's 46 million bank customers are being told they could save up to £600 by switching their current accounts to another provider.

From Monday, it should also be faster and easier to move to another bank.

Up to now, it has taken as long as 30 days to transfer a current account, but now the industry is promising it will take just seven working days.

The idea is to encourage more customers to switch accounts, so promoting better competition between the banks.

"It is definitely worth switching," said Mark Fiander from the Money Advice Service.

"It's not uncommon to save £500 or £600 by switching your bank. Now whether that's because you're not paying fees or charges, or equally if you're not getting interest that's sitting in your current account, it can really add up," he told the BBC.

Those who use a bank overdraft frequently could be amongst the biggest gainers.

But some banks also operate cash-back deals, which can provide hundreds of pounds of income.

I just discovered my bank now have a free add on that pays interest on balances up to £5000. So that was set up.

I worry about saving money on mortgages and getting money on savings accounts.

It can also be a huge pain notifying everyone that pays money into your account of any changes, that is probably why so few actually switch.

Not to mention any of those recurring payments you have on a cards which would need resetting for new cards and bank details.

It's actually a bloody faff. What would be better is that your current bank actively you the options to improve your current account rather than expecting you find out.

To be fair to most customers they are more interested in flogging you something else. On Friday I upgraded my current account to get interest and started to switch my credit card to a reward card. Yet they still wanted to flog me household contents insurance.

I'm assuming people who could save £600 are ones who keeps going over over day limits and pay fees for doing so etc. I can't see how else it could be done.

I think many could still save by ditching the packaged accounts with all the freebies that you never need. You could easily save £240 with some accounts by simply dropping the fees. Though as the article says it would help those going in an out of credit most.

I'm guessing it'll be things like overdraft fees and the like.

The main problem is, if you live in your overdraft it's not as easy to switch

No doubt someone will set up a “comparethebanks.com” type website to try to make it easy to find the best deal. Thing is, you could spend your life switching your bank/insurance/phone/credit cards/electricity/gas/water etc. etc and not do anything else with your life.

Indeed. The last time I changed my current account was in 2000. It almost went smoothly as I didn't have many direct debits back then.
There was one cock up regarding my credit card direct debit a few months later, but that was a minor issue.

I detest sorting out my ISA never mind anything else. And with a direct debit set up as savings for the nephew, I discovered it made next to no difference where I put that money cos it was gonna earn pennies.
