What about those laser pointers? They are bright enough to bring down jet planes apparently.

Pretty much any laser would do if you could paint the fly for long enough with it. It just has to be powerful enough to dump more heat energy into the fly than the fly can dissipate by radiation. Eventually your fly will reach ignition point. There's a certain amount of 'wet finger in the air' about some of the numbers but my estimates suggest a 500mW laser (which you can actually buy, it's not like death ray category) would set a fly on fire in about a second. Fit that on a mount with some sort of tracking mechanism, that'd do the job. Course, a tracking system able to track a fly and stick something on it with sufficient accuracy will cost you many, many times the cost of the laser. And you'll probably have to buy it from DARPA. Course you also wouldn't want to be in the room at the time, just in case the fly decided to land on your face. Unless you were wearing really thick sunglasses.

How much I love The Guardian's website content - I have to send everything to my Kindle otherwise I'd be reading off a laptop screen for days on end Sadly, I suspect it's all not very sustainable long-term

Capita. Hooray - they’ve been trying to contact me about my Civil Service pension. The letter I got says that they tried writing to me at my old address, but letters were being returned.
Unlikely as my old address is still where my parents live, so they would have forwarded stuff to me. Anyway, now I have a form to fill in and somewhere in the unipile is my NI number.

Why does one machine only want to load iTunes 11.0.5 and the other downloads 11.1? I will now have to transfer the files to get the other machine to see the iPhone!

That I got more squeamish as I got older - currently trying to watch the latest Horizon show and they've just taken a razor to a rat's brain...
