I was expecting something much worse like something from a classic B horror movie

Getting off this rig. Two and a half weeks down, one week to go. Unless there's no choppers available and we have to crew change by boat. If that happens that's at least one extra shift on the rig waiting for it to get here.

That's the one. And the thought of what happened to the baby boy didn't do my imagination any favours!

A quick bit of advice if anyone has any experience of this. I work nights (12hr shifts) and I've been asked to do overtime. Is this just standard rate time and-a-half that I should be getting if I accept? Never done night shift overtime before so I don't know what to ask for/expect.

I'm not sure. The way it works for our 12 shifts and overtime is that if we work more than 45 days per quarter, we get time and a half on our day rate.
As about half our wages come from a fixed salary, it actually works out that we get paid less per hour the more work we do. On the plus side if we do no work in a month we still get the salary.

It does depend on the terms in your contract of employment. It might be down to simple time off in lieu. You can never tell. Check with someone to see if it is worth doing.

I was sent an e-mail saying that "overtime would be paid" but I guess they assume I would know if it was standard rate or not. I'll query amount in a reply (I'll not get to see them until next Tuesday as tonight is my last night). Thanks guys. Mark

It is all down to company policy. Some will pay time and a third, some time and a half, some will pay more if it is over a certain number of hours.

I think it's different with nights too as it could be time and a half on top (overtime) of time and a half (unsociable hours) depending on how it's calculated and the place, I'd ask for the details as they could give you basic rate (or even less) and you had still been paid

As above, I'd just ask for the pay rate for the extra hours.
When I worked in a hospital, they were sometimes shortstaffed in terms of doctors and needed cover. They would ring me and offer work. The first thing I'd ask is how much. They'd invariably offer something stupidly low - my colleagues might sometimes accept but I would ask for a higher pay. They might so no but sometimes they would say yes. Chasing the payment often proved onerous so I just stopped offering to help out.

Jack, our dog, is very ill. After 6 weeks in a dog hotel, he was operated on for an eye lid tumour 2 weeks ago, then he stopped eating at the weekend, so I told the vet when we went back for a check-up on Tuesday. He was given an x-ray and they found an obstruction in his stomach. They then operated, but it was a "stomach deadlock" (Magenverklemmung). He had swallowed something that aggravated the stomach lining, which binded itself together. They cleared that problem, but he has been throwing up ever since, hasn't eaten for nearly 3 days and whenever he drinks water, he throws up minutes later. We went back to the vet's this afternoon and they are keeping him in. They called back to say that he has a bladder infection as well, blood in his urine, so much that they think it could be a problem with his liver. They also couldn't get him to keep anything down, so they are now putting in a stomach tube to force feed him, whilst they look for the cause of the problem.

I'm sorry to hear that, but would it not be kinder to put him to sleep? It sounds like a series of terminal problems that can't be fixed.

It certainly looks like that will be the outcome. But we want to know first if it is a terminal problem or just a string of problems...
