No, really. Intel say so: http://www.zdnet.com/intel-the-year-of- ... 000020849/If you can get passed the appalling grammar, some interesting facts such as "Chromebooks race to a quarter of all computer sales"

Are Chromebooks really doing that well? I've never seen one in the wild.

I was shocked to read it. I've never seen one either, but I have come close to buying one to replace my now dated netbook.

I might have guessed that it was an SJVN article...
Chromebooks are the number one selling laptop on Amazon in the USA, but outside the US, they don't seem to be doing that well.
But of you look at the figures, Linux itself has a very low percentage. It is Android and Chrome, 2 operating systems that totally hide the underlying operating system, that are making up the numbers. If you add OS X to the list, then *NIX has an even bigger lead, but you won't be able to run any Linux or UNIX applications on 99% of the devices.
Servers are also big users of Linux. But I notice they have dropped the 'on the desktop' part of the brag.
It is also mostly in the area of companion products that they are winning.
It is interesting, we have gone from 99.9% Linux terminals in 2009 to about 80% Windows now.
Windows users are using Linux every day? Not really, they are being fed a stream of text over html protocol, they aren't 'using' Linux at all.

Given iOS and Android are both Unix variants, I think we're already there in fact. They didn't take over the desktop, for a lot of people they just made it obsolete instead.

It's there in the title, but not in the article. It's a very shoddy piece journalism.

Yes. Again. And it will be in 2014 too. I just revisited the Chromebook range. The nice one is over a grand! https://play.google.com/store/devices/d ... pixel_wifi
